Harvard President, Under Intense Pressure to Resign, Now Says Threats to Jewish Students Are 'Vile'

Claudine Gay, president of Harvard, is facing intense pressure to resign after failing to condemn antisemitism on campus and calls by some Harvard students for the extermination of their Jewish classmates. Gay appeared Tuesday before the House Committee on Education and Workforce, where she was grilled by committee member and chair of the House Republican Conference, Elise Stefanik, for her weak stance on calls by some on her campus for an Intifada

Gay was not alone in failing to have the moral courage to condemn the blatant antisemitism raging on her campus. As RedState's Jerry Wilson reported, the presidents of the University of Pennsylvania and MIT, both women, joined Gay in failing to stand up for the safety of Jewish students on their campuses.

The backlash against the women has been fierce, with many prominent voices calling for all three to resign their positions immediately. One such voice, billionaire Bill Ackman, wasn't playing around and said all must "resign in disgrace":

The weak moral backbones of these women led to intense calls for all three to resign immediately.

They must all resign in disgrace.

If a CEO of one of our companies gave a similar answer, he or she would be toast within the hour.

Why has antisemitism exploded on campus and around the world?

Because of leaders like Presidents Gay, Magill and Kornbluth who believe genocide depends on the context.

To think that these are the leaders of Ivy League institutions that are charged with the responsibility to educate our best and brightest.

If anything makes leftists take notice, it's when the deep pockets they rely on for funding stop reaching for their wallets and, instead, start calling for a reckoning. That certainly seems to be the case with Claudine Gay, who now says calls for the extermination of Jews "have no place at Harvard, and those who threaten our Jewish students will be held to account."

Here's the statement she released Wednesday:

The obvious question is: Why didn't she say this yesterday during her testimony on Capitol Hill? She was given ample opportunity to clarify how she, personally, and the university as a whole would handle calls for genocide by supporters of Hamas against Jews. She repeatedly retreated to the "freedom of expression" cop-out, which would have been of little comfort to Jewish students who feel unsafe going to their classes and living their lives on the Harvard campus.

So, why the clarification, such as it is, by Gay? Donors. When donors want to hand you a pink slip, you act like you care about the issue du jour.

The other big question here is what, exactly, is Gay going to do about the increasingly dangerous and hostile environment on her campus? Strongly worded tweets are one thing, but they are nothing without action. Her statement is long on trying to save her own hide, short on details about how the threat-makers and instigators will be "held to account." With her campus closely resembling 1930s Germany, Gay may want to spend some time actually leading on this issue.

Let's add one additional question: If this was any other ethnic or religious group being threatened, such as blacks or Muslims, would Gay be so ambivalent about dealing with it? Yes, if it was threats against Christians; no, if the threats were against absolutely anyone else. Gay has made it clear whom she sees as the enemy.

If you haven't had a chance to see Elise Stefanik absolutely lay into Claudine Gay, it's well worth the watch.
