The Latest Immigration Numbers Suggest the Trump Factor Is Losing Its Edge

Those illegal immigration numbers aren’t looking too great, according to the data released this morning by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

In fact, we’re pretty much back to Obama-era levels of immigration.

According to the data:

Nearly 40,000 illegal immigrants were nabbed attempting to sneak in at the border in November, which was up about 12 percent compared to October, and more than twice the monthly numbers from March and April, when Mr. Trump touted his early accomplishments.

Apparently, they heard about Trump’s September meeting with Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi, where he turned on Republicans in the room and handed Chuck and Nan-Nan what they wanted, in regards to the debt ceiling, along with a side order of DACA protection.

In fact, at Pelosi’s request, Trump tweeted out that “Dreamers” had nothing to fear.

Those shocked, or just in denial about Trump’s flip should not be. He has no ideological mooring in any set principles. The “R” after his name is just for the sake of convenience.

That Republicans so readily embraced the lifelong liberal con artist shows their own ideological foundations may be lacking, for that matter.

Still, Trump made some promises, and one of those was to control the border.

He really, really sucks at keeping campaign promises.

According to the new numbers, families breaking the laws of a sovereign nation and attempting to storm the border together rose an alarming 45 percent last month.

What about those unaccompanied minors?

There was a 26 percent rise in unaccompanied minors at the border in November.

The 39,006 people apprehended in November is still less than the previous two years, but is more than 2012, 2013 or 2014, signaling a return to Obama-era levels of illegal immigration on the border.

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss, eh?

At this point, let’s just fling open the gates and start passing out MAGA caps at the border. Nobody has the stomach to do what needs to be done.

And let’s not talk about that wall. In the past year wasted with romanticizing how great it could be and haggling over the exorbitant costs, strategic fencing, drones, and quick responders on the ground could have already been implemented.

It’s going to take a commonsense, proactive approach, and the willingness to implement the laws already on the books regarding immigration to get this problem under control. Who in Washington is willing to do that?
