Fresh off a humiliating repudiation by the US Senate, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has decided to double down in her quest to, Captain-Ahab-like, pursue President Trump to the ends of the earth to exact her vengeance.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Monday that the House would move to establish an independent commission to investigate what led to a mob storming the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 — one similar to the body that studied the 9/11 attacks for 15 months before issuing a sweeping 585-page report.
Two days after former president Donald Trump was acquitted by the Senate of inciting the deadly attack, Pelosi (D-Calif.) signaled in a letter to Democratic colleagues that the House would soon consider legislation to form a commission to “investigate and report” on the attack and interference in election proceedings, as well as an appropriation to pay for enhanced security features on the Capitol grounds.
The GOP’s commonsense move would be to tell her that she can have her commission but that no one from the GOP will have anything to do with what is clearly a smear campaign. Unfortunately, that is not the way the GOP operates. If there is a chance to preen and profile before television cameras, our GOP senators can’t resist the catnip no matter the obvious agenda of such a commission.
Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.), who voted for Trump’s acquittal, said he wants to know more about the timeline of the president’s actions at the time and what congressional leaders knew about the potential threat.
“We need a 9/11 Commission to find out what happened and make sure it never happens again‚” he told Chris Wallace of “Fox News Sunday,” even as he castigated Democrats and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) over the impeachment.

Rep. Madeleine Dean (D-Pa.), a House impeachment manager, who also spoke on “This Week,” alluded to the partisanship of Saturday’s vote, saying a commission could avoid political infighting.
“Of course, there must be a full commission, an impartial commission, not guided by politics, but filled with people who would stand up to the courage of their conviction, like Dr. Cassidy,” she said.
Holding up the 9/11 Commission as though it were some kind of useful exercise simply relies upon most Americans’ ignorance about what went on during that travesty. The Commission had two clear missions. The first was to absolve the Clinton administration for all responsibility for the 9/11 attacks even though all the prep work and planning was accomplished under Clinton. The presence of Muslim students in flight schools who weren’t interested in learning to land was reported to the FBI under Clinton. The second was to saddle President Bush with 100% of the responsibility. The idiot President’s Daily Brief used to claim that Bush was dismissive of intelligence about the radical Islamic threat to the United States was the worst sort of ass-covering by the CIA and actually was nothing more substantial than saying, “watch out, some bad sh** might happen.”
The same will happen with any commission about January 6. A bunch of limp, flaccid GOP Establishment types will team up with representatives of the hardcore, militant left to build another Russia Hoax scenario in which the only questions asked are those structured to obscure the actions of Nancy Pelosi in preventing an adequate response to intelligence reports and to saddle President Trump and attendees at President Trump’s January 6 rally with all the blame. You can bet that this commission will support the cockamamie claim that the January 6 riot was an “insurrection,” read Kurt Schlichter’s Stop Calling It an ‘Insurrection.’

Calling for a commission to attempt to slime President Trump is a sure sign that, unlike a lot of National-Review-esque pundits, neither the Democrats nor the GOP Establishment think they have seen the last of Donald Trump. He is the clear leader in the 2024 primary field, and if he decides to run again, there is no one who can stop him. The commission report is just like the Russia Hoax in that a political cudgel is being created out of nothing. It is also a sign that Pelosi is a broken woman obsessed with punishing the man who treated her with all the respect she deserved while he was president.
