Many years ago, there was a vigorous debate on this site’s front page over the propriety of weaponizing abortion as a political instrument. The debate has vanished as old RedState archives vanished from the internet and you’d have to have a better memory than mine to find it via the Wayback Machine. Principled arguments can be made that the issue is too important to have it associated with a party. This was the basic thrust of the bizarre objection by some to several of the Covington Catholic High School kids wearing MAGA hats they had bought from a Washington D.C. street vendor. My view then, and now, is that abortion is a potent political tool. It is visceral. It is easy to both defend the pro-life position and expose the heinousness of abortion. The same people who object to showing the aftermath of abortion because it will allegedly turn some people off, forget that high school students were once required to watch video of the results of car accidents as part of their Driver’s Education program (shout out to the Ohio State Patrol for the most gruesome product, the fact that I can still recall it testifies to the effectiveness) and, more to the point, Eisenhower required Germans living next to death camps to tour the facilities and German officials were required to sit through hours of film of death camps as part of the de-Nazification process. My feeling is that if you look at an aborted baby and you are mad at enough at the person who showed it to you to support abortion, you are an inhuman monster who can just f*** right off.

In the aftermath of the huge sh**storm that has hit Virginia over the proposed infanticide law and Governor Ralph “No that’s not blackface that’s my Michael Jackson costume” Northam’s endorsement of killing babies after delivery, President Trump is talking about making a strong statement on the right to life in his state of the union speech:

President Donald Trump is telling conservative allies he wants to incorporate firm anti-abortion language into his State of the Union address Tuesday, and potentially include an anti-abortion figure among his list of invitees, according to four sources familiar with his plans.

Trump sees an opening to energize his evangelical supporters and capture moderate voters who administration officials believe may be turned off by widespread coverage of New York’s newest abortion law, which allows for termination of some pregnancies after the 24-week mark for health reasons.

Abortion has crested as an issue for conservative legal activists in recent days after New York’s Democratic governor, Andrew Cuomo, signed the late-term abortion bill last Tuesday. Trump has discussed the issue with prominent conservative Christians, including on a phone call this week with Faith & Freedom Coalition President Ralph Reed, a White House official confirmed to POLITICO.

“The president wants to reaffirm his commitment to pro-life things,” said the Republican close to the White House, adding that Trump doesn’t want his third appearance before a joint session of Congress to be “all fire and brimstone.”

The issue gained more currency on Wednesday after Virginia’s Democratic governor, Ralph Northam, defended a similar bill introduced in his state Legislature. In an interview with The Daily Caller later that day, Trump said he was “surprised” at Northam’s comments.

Let me say here that I have no insights into President Trump’s heart. I don’t know if he’s this generation’s greatest pro-life warrior or someone who is agnostic on the subject and is trying to shore up his standing with his base. What is more, I really don’t care. No matter what he believes, as Marc Thiessen says, he has become the most fearlessly pro-life president in history. Whether small things, like actually attending a March for Life, unlike any other Republican president, or larger ones, like defunding UN abortion programs, President Trump hasn’t faltered in is actions.

A clear majority of Americans oppose late-term abortion. That is the beginning of a pricking of the national conscience. That, I will submit, is why we have a blizzard of infanticide bills being enacted (in New York, for instance) and proposed. The pro-aborts are trying to establish a legal framework to protect infanticide before the popular revulsion takes on a political shape.

We need to tie abortion, in general, to late-term abortion because they are the same act and pointing out the evil of one leads to the evil of the other being recognized. And we need to tie this issue round the neck of every Democrat candidate and make them wear it like a bowtie. A hot pink bowtie.

Opposition to abortion has been a standard plank in the GOP platform since 1976. A liberalized abortion regime has been part of the Democrat platform about as long. Abortion, particularly late term abortion, is a lightning rod issue that can send even the most partisan Democrat running for the tall grass and we’ve been foolish to not use it not only because it is good politics but because it is the right thing to do.
