The Daily Caller is calling shenanigans on the “investigation” of Hillary Clinton’s cavalier disregard for the security of highly classified information. It seems that the lead Department of Justice investigator was not exactly what one would call “disinterested.”

One of the Justice Department officials who interviewed Hillary Clinton in July as part of the government’s investigation into her email practices has contributed to President Obama’s presidential campaigns, The Daily Caller can reveal.

David H. Laufman is named in the notes taken during Clinton’s July 2 interview. Since December 2014 he has served as chief of the counterespionage section of the Justice Department’s National Security Division.

But Federal Election Commission records show that Laufman has at least some political leanings.

He has contributed $850 to Obama’s two presidential campaigns. He gave $300 directly to the campaign on April 22, 2012 and another $300 to the Obama Victory Fund on the same day. In January 2008, he contributed $250 to Obama’s campaign. Notably, he has not contributed to Hillary Clinton’s campaigns, either this cycle or in 2008.

This is the kind of thing that happens is a freakin banana republic. I don’t know that Laufman had a hand in deciding that Hillary Clinton turning her personal email server, maintained by a State Department employee at government expense, into a flea market for classified information was an unfortunate misunderstanding rather than a felonious act that endangered lives as well as revealing US secrets. What I do know that any administration with even a whit of respect for the rule of law would have gone the extra mile to ensure that no one who was a political donor — to either party — was involved in the investigation. But then again, any administration with respect for the rule of law wouldn’t have had the attorney general meet with Bill Clinton on a private airplane.

And people are amazed that Donald Trump has built a sizeable following on nothing more than the belief that the whole system is corrupt and should be burned to the ground.
