So Chuck Schumer has taken a lesson from [mc_name name=’Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’M000355′ ] and has started playing Failure Theater with his constituents.

The decision by Senator Chuck Schumer of New York to oppose the Iran nuclear deal has rattled the Democratic bulwark around the accord, emboldened the deal’s opponents in both parties, and set off a wave of condemnation from liberals for the man who hopes to lead Senate Democrats in the next Congress.

But supporters of the accord said on Friday that Democratic defections would not be enough to bring it down.

This is just so much baloney. If Schumer had wanted to oppose the deal he would have raised red flags earlier. Right now the White House knows the “resolution of disapproval” (seriously, folks, it took Bob freakin Corker to come up with this nonsense) will not get the House and Senate votes necessary to override an inevitable veto by Obama. Even if it did, it would still be meaningless as Obama has already led the drive to lift UN sanctions on Iran. And our allies are lined up to do business.

Before the ink was even dry on the Iran nuclear deal, European leaders and executives were heading to the airport to restart trade with an Iranian market described in almost feverish terms as “an El Dorado” and potential “bonanza.”
Germany sent a delegation five days after the signing of the accord in Vienna on July 14. The French foreign minister, Laurent Fabius, arrived in Tehran on Wednesday. Italian government ministers will get there on Tuesday. Business leaders are to follow soon. They will include 70 to 80 top executives of France’s largest companies in September.

Daishiro Yamagiwa, vice-minister of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, will visit Tehran and meet top Iranian government officials on August 8 and 9, the ministry said in a statement on Friday.

Naturally, Schumer’s decision was accompanied by the faux outrage of Obama partisans who are create the smokescreen of heroism for Schumer:

MoveOn.org announced a “donor strike” after the New York Democrat’s announcement that he opposes the Iran deal and compared him to Joseph I. Lieberman, while former senior White House aide Dan Pfeiffer warned the Democratic base wouldn’t support Schumer for leader.

And the White House and Schumer, we are supposed to believe, are now at each other’s throats:

The White House lit into Sen. Chuck Schumer on Friday for his decision to vote no on the Iran deal and suggested that he’s put his clear path to be the next Democratic leader in doubt.

And a person familiar with Schumer’s decision said the senator’s allies blame the White House for leaking news from a private call Schumer made to President Barack Obama on Thursday afternoon and breaking a direct request the senator made to the president to give him until Friday to put word out about his decision. The person also noted, with more than a little acidity, that Obama was the only person Schumer told of his decision before the news started to leak out.

Schumer faces no challenge whatsoever from his constituents over voting against this deal and it lets him burnish his pro-Israel credentials. He can go back home and say, “hey, I tried but the votes just weren’t there, Sorry about Tel Aviv being nuked but sh** happens.” It doesn’t hurt Obama either.

This is just failure theater that would make [mc_name name=’Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’C001071′ ] and [mc_name name=’Sen. John McCain (R-AZ)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’M000303′ ] and [mc_name name=’Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’M000355′ ] proud.
