No committee hearings scheduled for today as Congress wraps up its winter recess, but there's some scramblin' afoot up on the Hill as (partial) shutdown deadline numero uno looms:

Lawmakers are racing to avoid a partial shutdown by Friday’s funding deadline, an effort that grew more difficult over the weekend after leaders failed to reach a deal — and traded barbs on who is responsible for the holdup.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) announced Sunday that congressional leaders had not yet reached an agreement on compromise spending bills, blaming House Republicans for the delay. But Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) shot back, placing the onus on “new Democrat demands” in negotiations.

President Biden has a busy day...heading to New York for a campaign event. After receiving his Daily Briefing, he'll head for the Big Apple.

Two cases are set for oral argument before the Supreme Court today: 

  1. Moody v. Netchoice - This involves a Florida law that attempts to prevent social media companies from abusing their enormous power to censor speech and has significant First Amendment implications.
  2. Netchoice, LLC v. Paxton - Similar issue involving a Texas law (HB20). 

Former FBI informant Alexander Smirnov is set to appear in federal court in California today following his re-arrest. Today's hearing is to determine whether Smirnov must remain in custody pending trial. 

MORNING MUSING

My apologies for the delay on this morning's "Minute" — it turns out that driving halfway across the country tends to wear one out and zap the brainpower to write coherently for a time. The good news is: I am back from my travels and slowly getting back into the swing of things. The bad news is: I am back from my travels and slowly getting back into the swing of things. 

In all seriousness, though, this looks to be a busy week on multiple fronts, so we'll do our utmost to bring you the day's anticipated highlights here each morning.
