On Monday, we reported on a swatting incident that took place over the weekend involving the home of Judge Tanya Chutkan, who is overseeing Jack Smith's federal prosecution of former President Donald Trump in Washington, D.C.

In that instance, law enforcement was called to Chutkan's home after reports of a shooting at the residence. As noted at the time, there has been a series of such swatting incidents involving high-profile political figures.

Unfortunately, hers wasn't the only such incident involving a high-profile official on Sunday. Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft was also reportedly swatted Sunday evening.

Ashcroft, who is currently running for governor, was at home in Jefferson City with his family when he was contacted by law enforcement. His office issued a statement regarding the incident.

“It ended up with me walking out of my front door with my hands up with several armed police officers in front of my house. I’m so thankful the Jefferson City Police Department handled the situation with an extreme amount of professionalism and that no one was hurt. It is unfortunate their resources and manpower had to be used on a prank,” said Ashcroft. “I am hopeful those responsible for such childish, cowardice acts will be brought to justice.”

The police told Ashcroft that they received an emergency call saying that there had been a shooting at the residence.

In fact, there has been a spate of such incidents lately involving prominent officials and political figures. Jack Smith was reportedly targeted in an attempted swatting on Christmas Day. George Washington Law professor Jonathan Turley was the victim of an attempted swatting shortly after Christmas. And Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has been swatted numerous times.

Now, there's been another swatting incident, this one involving a bomb threat at the home of Judge Arthur Engoron, who's overseeing the civil fraud trial against Trump in New York.

Authorities responded to a bomb threat at the home of the judge overseeing former President Trump’s New York civil fraud case, just hours before closing arguments are expected in the trial.

A court official confirmed to The Associated Press on Thursday that police were looking into a threat at Judge Arthur Engoron’s home on Long Island.

“There was a threat. I can confirm a bomb threat,” Al Baker, a court spokesperson, said per the AP. “As of now we are going forward as scheduled and the court proceedings and closing arguments are going ahead as planned.”

...

The Nassau County Police Department told The Hill that it responded to a “swatting incident,” in Great Neck Gardens on Long Island, but did not confirm the name of the resident.

As noted, closing arguments were set to begin on Thursday. The trial, which began in October, will proceed as planned.

So, what exactly is going on here? Is this the same individual (or group of individuals) placing these calls? A coordinated effort or a bunch of copycats? Is this being perpetrated by people who think they're going to scare these officials or derail proceedings? Or by people who hope that — in the case of the incidents involving Smith, Chutkan, and Engeron — supporters of the former president will be blamed?

Whoever is behind these incidents needs to be stopped and called to account.
