The entrance sign to Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, is brick. Underneath the school’s name, in script, it reads: “Bienvenidos.” Welcome. A warm, inviting greeting.

It stands in stark contrast to the horror that was visited upon the school on Tuesday. I know there aren’t any words I can offer about that unspeakable evil that will erase what happened or the pain of the families and the community in its aftermath. I don’t know that anyone has the right words. We certainly don’t have all the answers.

But that doesn’t absolve us from trying to find them. It’s the unfortunate human condition that we alone can’t overcome sin and vanquish evil. But we were given this world to live in by our Creator, along with our intelligence and humanity. And we’re charged with being good stewards of it – and of one another.

I believe we’re capable of working toward rational, workable solutions – the question isn’t capability; it’s willingness. Do we have the will to take a hard look not just at others but at ourselves; to set aside our partisan impulses and our pride to do what’s needed to face down this type of evil and make this world one in which we can once again greet one another – sincerely – with “Bienvenidos.”
