Amid all of the discussions surrounding the New York City mayoral race, there have been some jokes and some serious talk as well about the possibility of a mass exodus of New York residents if Democrat Socialist Party member Zohran Mamdani wins the race.
It's a real possibility, according to a recent poll from the Daily Mail, which indicated some 765,000 or so would "definitely" leave, and that another 2 million or so would consider fleeing in the event Mamdani is victorious.
"The departure of at least 765,000 citizens would be one of the biggest mass exoduses in American history, with a population equivalent in size to Washington DC, Las Vegas or Seattle leaving the Big Apple," the news outlet noted.

Where would they go? Most likely to red states where the cost of living is low and the job opportunities are plentiful, like Florida, which saw a big influx of New Yorkers during the COVID pandemic as then-NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D), an opponent of Mamdani's in the 2025 mayoral race, implemented one draconian policy after another.
The possibility of more New Yorkers exiting the Empire State in waves once again is something DeSantis has frequently commented on over the last several months. In early July, for instance, after Mamdani was declared the winner of the Democrat mayoral primary, DeSantis said this:
"We've absorbed a lot of people over the years," DeSantis told Fox News' Sean Hannity on Tuesday evening. "I think this guy's policies, soup to nuts, are probably the most radical left that I've ever seen of a major party candidate in a big jurisdiction."
"I'm telling you, I think I'm going to have to charge an entry tax or something because of this guy, because I don't know if we're going to be able to absorb everyone that's going to flee his poor rule if he gets in," DeSantis added.
On Election Day, DeSantis had more to say on the topic:
Mamdani is going to be realtor of the year in way more places than Palm Beach if he wins. https://t.co/GkzdcqtVQY

He even joked (perhaps only half jokingly?) with one X user that he'd consider sending the NYC refugees to southern Connecticut if necessary:

This is a conversation/complaint that red state conservatives have a lot, that people from blue cities and states will head south when it gets too expensive/stifling to live where they currently are, yet many of them will bring with them the exact same ideological belief system that led to their cities and states becoming unlivable, which then makes previously sane areas in red states start to get expensive, more woke, etc.
I have no problem saying this: If you are someone who is fed up with the living/working situation in a blue part of the country, please don't move to red cities and states if all you're going to do is ruin them for the people who already live there by advocating for the same types of things that led your city or state to become a place you no longer want to live.
That might sound "unwelcoming" to some, but that's kinda the point. Reasonable political disagreement is fine, but we're fast approaching the point where reasonable disagreement can be had with the modern left (some would say we're already past it). I don't welcome wokeism and far-leftism in any form in my beloved state of North Carolina, nor any other red state, not now, not ever.
Sorry, not sorry.
