To hear and watch Gavin Newsom tell it, everything he does is for the people, for the future, for America.
The California governor and entrenched Democrat politico would like people to believe that he is making a tremendous sacrifice in trying to juggle dual roles as both the Golden State's CEO and self-appointed Senior Resistance Leader against President Donald Trump.
The image he is trying to craft relays the following message: He is going to save you, and he is going to save America - one speech, one podcast, one tweet, one wave of the scepter at the state legislature at a time.

But Gavin Newsom has been in public office since 1996, holding various positions, including San Francisco Supervisor, San Francisco Mayor, Lieutenant Governor, and now Governor.
Obviously, he's aiming for a White House run in 2028. But it's going to be a hard sell once more voters are made aware that Newsom has presided over some or all parts of California for three decades as crime and homelessness surged, and as the cost of living and doing business skyrocketed - all on his watch.
As Exhibit A on Newsom's fecklessness as a leader, we turn to his reaction to Wednesday's mass shooting in Minneapolis. Predictably, it was to accuse the GOP of being unwilling to do anything in the face of such tragedies.
"We cannot even make it through the first week of school without mass shootings. And the @GOP will continue to do absolutely nothing while our kids are being gunned down. This is sick," Newsom declared on X.
What he didn't mention, however, was that in his own backyard, there were three mass shootings within a few miles of each other in Los Angeles, where lives were lost and people were injured:
There were THREE mass shootings in Los Angeles over the past few days that for some reason, Gavin Newsom didn’t feel the need to virtue signal about.

Gavin always has time for anything not related to California. https://t.co/GLCHJlMBqj
"Gavin always has time for anything not related to California."
That really needs to sink in with people, because every time Gavin Newsom has taken on a new position in state government, it's not been with his focus on helping the community. It's been with his eye on the next prize, and what he needs to say and do with the "right" people and special interest groups to get there.

December 2023, for instance, was the 20th anniversary of a promise Gavin Newsom made as mayor of SF: to end homelessness in the city in 10 years. Here's what he has said about it over the years:
Gavin Newsom just needs a few more years and a few more dollars and THEN he will solve the homeless crisis in California.

Fascinatingly, Newsom seemed to argue against himself holding future office in this unhinged rant from May:
As a taxpayer, not just Governor. I'm not interested in funding failure anymore. I'm not. I won't. Time to do your job. People are dying on their watch, dying on their watch. I don't know -- how do people get reelected? Look at these encampments. They're a disgrace. They've been there years and years and years and years. I've heard that same rhetoric for years. People are dying. Kids are being born.
If Gavin Newsom can't carry through with the promises he's made to his own state, and ignores the big problems there because he's more interested in making a national name for himself, then why should voters trust that he'd make a good president?
The answer is that they shouldn't, as Newsom, in his own inartful way, said in so many words in that May speech. Think about it.
