'Didn't Hide It': Mike Johnson Reacts to Hilarious State of the Union Meme Talk As They Keep Rolling In

If there's one thing I'm not likely to forget about the 2024 State of the Union event outside of Joe Biden's grumpy old man glares, it will be the priceless reactions of House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) who understandably could not contain the head-shaking, eye-rolling, and sighing over Biden's blatantly partisan campaign speech address.

As RedState reported, Johnson quickly became the surprise star of the evening, with his comical facial expressions to Biden's numerous false claims and angry rhetoric stealing the show very early on.

The only thing missing, in my view, was Johnson tearing up the speech in dramatic fashion at the conclusion of it a la former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), which would have been a very fitting end to Biden's unhinged and shockingly unpresidential diatribe.

After the speech was over, Johnson appeared for an interview with Sean Hannity on Fox News, where he was of course asked about Biden's remarks and to share his thoughts. After noting that Biden didn't even bother to bring up the critical issue of the border crisis until some 40 minutes into his speech, Johnson wryly pointed out that he was aware there were memes of his reactions out there on social media.

"There's a lot of memes, I guess, going around tonight about my facial expressions," Johnson stated with a slight grin. "I did not like the speech, I don't think the American people liked it. And there wasn't much I could do about that. I guess I didn't hide that very well."

No, he didn't hide it very well, but then again, who could?

I saw quite a bit of talk on the Twitter machine Thursday night about how maybe we should get back to tradition from the old days of a President submitting a written report to Congress on the State of the Union versus giving speeches. I think there's some merit to the argument considering how theatrical in nature they've become over the years and how, in Biden's case in particular, they've become nasty, bitterly partisan affairs that are beneath the office of the presidency.

My only real argument against it is the fact that in doing so, it would rob us of being able to see things like Johnson's reactions. It would also deprive us of the humorous scenes of some members of Congress falling asleep well before the speech gets underway, which I believe happened with my colleague Streiff's favorite Democratic Congressman Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.).

In any event, may the Johnson memes live on, and may Biden and Kamala Harris be shown the door in November.
