We’ve written numerous times here in the past about how World Cup soccer champ and self-styled progressive activist Megan Rapinoe has a penchant for undercutting her own arguments when it comes to “issues” like equal pay.
For instance, in July 2019 and just a couple of days after she and the U.S. women’s soccer team were victorious in the World Cup, Rapinoe accidentally made the case that the amount of revenue generated by a professional sport should determine the level of income its players receive.
Despite the fact that her spokesperson skills leave a lot to be desired, Rapinoe is viewed in radical left-wing “feminist” circles as a champion for women, as exemplified last week when she visited the White House for an event that was supposed to highlight the unfortunate financial plight of high-profile female sports figures like Rapinoe, who make hundreds of thousands if not millions in endorsement deals alone.
“I’ve been disrespected and dismissed because I am a woman,” Rapinoe said during her visit. “I’ve been told that I don’t deserve any more than less because I am a woman. Despite all the wins, I’m still paid less than men who do the same job that I do.”
Ironically, disrespecting women is precisely what Rapinoe did in a column she wrote for the Washington Post in which she argued that it was imperative that men who identify as women be allowed to compete in women’s sports — in the name of equality and fairness:
These bills [like South Dakota’s] are attempting to solve a problem that doesn’t exist. Transgender kids want the opportunity to play sports for the same reasons other kids do: to be a part of a team where they feel like they belong. Proponents of these bills argue that they are protecting women. As a woman who has played sports my whole life, I know that the threats to women’s and girls’ sports are lack of funding, resources and media coverage; sexual harassment; and unequal pay.
[…]
I know what it feels like to be singled out and treated differently. No one should be treated unfairly because of who they are — and that is especially true of kids. Adults can’t pretend that we care about the well-being of children while actively creating environments that cause serious harm to them. We can’t make demands for a false sense of fairness while ignoring the actual needs of women and girls.
There are plenty of women who would argue that the real threat to women’s sports are activists on the left who can’t see the forest for the trees on this issue. For instance, sports legend Martina Navratilova who, like Rapinoe, is a lesbian, has argued against including transgender women in women’s sports on grounds that there are “inherent” differences between men and women that don’t change just because one begins to identify as the other gender:
It is obvious that men have certain inherent physiological advantages over women. These include height, weight, bone-density and muscularity. These advantages play a different role depending on the sport, with power-lifting being the biggest and most obvious advantage.
For arguing in favor of keeping women’s sports the way they are, Navratilova — who was once viewed as a heroic LGBTQ rights icon — was likened to Joseph Goebbels by some of her “out” critics. She was also effectively canceled from being an ambassador for an LGBTQ activist group.
It is undeniable that there are women in sports who are feeling demoralized by this whole debate because they’re being made to feel as though if they dare to speak out with a different opinion than Rapinoe’s and other prominent figures like her that they, too, will be ostracized from the sports they love.
It’s a crying shame — literally — that this debate has become so one-sided thanks, in part, to the mainstream press, social media hall monitors on the more popular platforms, Democrats, and liberal activists like Rapinoe who speak out of both sides of their mouths when it comes to women’s equality.
Literally what’s happening here is that women are being silenced on this issue not just by transgender women (men who identify as women) but also by actual women who proclaim to be speaking on their behalf. You truly cannot make this stuff up. What is old (silencing women using shaming tactics) is becoming new again — and by the very people who claim to value diversity.
“Disgusting” doesn’t quite cover what this is, but it’s the best I’ve got right about now.
