That the mainstream media has given overwhelmingly favorable and positive coverage to New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) over his Wuhan coronavirus response in comparison to Republican governors like Ron DeSantis (FL), Greg Abbott (TX), and Brian Kemp (GA) is not exactly shocking news, but it’s worth pointing out and analyzing all the same.

All three Republican governors have made it a point in media interviews to push back on the false narratives promoted by cable news networks like CNN and print/online outlets like the Washington Post that they somehow failed in their handling of the outbreak in their states simply because they chose not to follow New York’s lead in how they approached managing the crisis and combating the virus.

In fact, neither New York City nor New York state have been shining leadership examples of how to effectively manage a health crisis, as we have long known but which has slowly but surely come into sharper focus thanks in part to in-depth investigations done by Pro Publica and – surprisingly enough – even the New York Times.

But even with more information coming to light about how Cuomo and NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio completely and utterly botched the handling of the virus in their city and state, the media still persists in treating Cuomo like a rock star, which has to be infuriating to the hard-working red state Republican governors who they still bash with regularity.

Over the weekend, Gov. Abbott took to the Twitter machine and shared a comparison graphic that showed his state and Florida compared to California and New York on the issue of how each were doing since the outbreaks started in their respective states. The differences were noteworthy:

For purposes of discussion, we’ll focus on Abbott and DeSantis vs. Cuomo because Gov. Gavin Newsom’s failures have been a different kind of fail than Cuomo’s, and were covered by my RedState colleague Bonchie earlier today.

It’s really pretty remarkable how different the outcomes have been in each state when you consider how the mainstream media have treated Cuomo as some type of magnificent leader while on the other hand trashing DeSantis, Abbott, and Kemp as governors who were okay with the virus death rate increasing in the name of capitalism.

The graphic also further underscores the point that the one-size-fits-all approach amplified by the mainstream media and Democrats was never the way to go about managing this crisis. What would work best for a state the size of New York would not work for a state like Iowa, for a variety of reasons including population density considerations.

Not only that, but New York’s response wasn’t just a failure because it was a bad plan. It was also a failure because Cuomo and de Blasio couldn’t come to agreement on how to handle the crisis in the early days of the spread in the city and state, which led to the massive outbreaks in New York state and contributed to the outbreaks in other states across the country.

And recent reports show NY made critical mistakes in their handling of the outbreak well after it started, including failing to have the dirty subways cleaned and sanitized nightly. In fact, it wasn’t until Cuomo gave the order a couple of weeks ago that the subways began shutting down nightly for cleaning and sanitizing.

It’s too bad the mainstream media have been unwilling to point out these differences when they report on governors and their handling of the crisis, but it’s about par for the course when you consider their obvious political leanings.
