There are many not-so-flattering things Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has accidentally revealed about herself since she was elected to the U.S. House, and one of them is her knack for completely overlooking the parts about the history of the Democratic party that run counter to her “party of the people” narrative.
She demonstrated this again over the weekend, after retweeting a video of herself stating “The only time religious freedom is invoked is in the name of bigotry and discrimination”:
'The only time religious freedom is invoked is in the name of bigotry and discrimination. I'm tired of it' — @AOC just flipped the entire ‘religious freedom’ argument on its head pic.twitter.com/yS57LNnpBb

The freshman Congresswoman expanded on her remarks in her Saturday tweet by listing out those who in the past used religion as an excuse to “advance” bigotry and discrimination:
There’s a long history in the US of abusing scripture to advance the causes of bigotry & discrimination.
Slaveholders did it.
Segregationists did it.
White supremacists do it.
And it continues.Yet if Christ repeated himself today, they’d likely denounce him as a radical, too. https://t.co/y19PBDw5co

Understandably, there were Twitter users who jumped in to drop some inconvenient truths and observations into the discussion:
Before, during & after the Civil War, slave holders, segregationists & white supremacists were Democrats. Democrats voted against freedom & citizenship for slaves 100%. They wrote Jim Crow laws & hanged blacks because the KKK was their militia.
Learn some history or shut up.

Slaveholders,Segregationists, and White Supremacists were all members of your political party, the Democrats. Don't drag Republicans into it. Religious freedom affords citizens the right to worship a God of their choosing, nothing to do w/bigotry. Pull head out of AZZ, @AOC

And beyond the fact the hateful groups she referenced in her post were indeed Democrats, most of the people today who are fighting in the courts for their religious freedoms, including cake bakers, florists, and faith-based organizations are the very ones being persecuted – by Democrats like AOC:

As others noted, there’s a reason Democrats don’t mention nor care about the religious rights of groups like Little Sisters of the Poor:
Remember when the Democrat Party loudly booed God at their national convention?

….to summarize, if one disagrees with your point of view one is not “Christ-like”….in your opinion. Instructive and helpful in figuring out whether you are someone worthy of consideration. Thank you.

In other words, bigotry and discrimination are indeed factors in religious freedom arguments – but not in the way Ocasio-Cortez makes them out to be. Rather than it being the baker or the wedding planner who is being bigoted and discriminatory, it’s Democrats like AOC who are being bigoted and discriminatory against people of faith — by trying to shut them up, drive them out of business and into the shadows.
AOC really should think before she speaks/tweets. I guess that’s just too much to ask of prestigious high school science fair award winners like her, though.
