If broadcast journalism awards were given for least self aware morning political cable news talk show host, Joe Scarborough would easily be in contention every year if not named the outright winner. There are many reasons for this, but the primary one revolves around how he routinely badgers and chides Republicans for allegedly doing things he’s actually done himself (but don’t you dare call him out on it!).

The latest instance of Scarborough’s staggering lack of self-awareness came on Monday night when the longtime MSNBC talk show host appeared with his wife and co-host Mika Brzezinski on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. One of the topics discussed was, of course, President Trump and their visceral dislike of him.

During the segment where they talked about possible GOP Senate “defectors” on impeachment, here’s what Scarborough said, with an occasional chiming in from Mika:

So far, though, they have not seen any “courage” from Republicans, including those who are not running for re-election in the fall. “There have been some Republicans who will kind of go halfway there and then pull back,” Brzezinski said.

“That’s what I don’t understand, what job is worth selling your political soul for?” Scarborough asked. “You can look at the people who are running in Republican primaries, and you can predict what they’re going to do. It’s very disappointing.”

This isn’t the first time Scarborough, who is now a registered independent, has leveled this accusation at Republicans. Back in May, he accused Sen. Lindsey Graham of “selling his soul” for Trump. Graham responded on Brian Kilmeade’s radio program by saying “The one thing I’m not going to worry about is pleasing Joe Scarborough, that’s not on my list.”

As the host of MSNBC’s Morning Joe, Scarborough and co-host/paramour Mika Brzezinski did more than anyone in the media, including Fox News, to give Donald Trump an open and friendly platform to advance his presidential campaign during the 2016 GOP primary. Scarborough even bragged about how he would visit Trump to offer debate advice and once penned a Washington Post op-ed, claiming that conservatives who opposed Trump sounded like the “arrogant and unmoored left-wing pundits let loose on MSNBC during the Bush years.”

So assuming for purposes of discussion that Scarborough is right about Republicans “selling their political soul” because it benefits them to be seen as friendly to Trump, what does that make the 2016 version of Joe Scarborough? And what does his convenient about-face make him now?
