On any given day, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) can be either gobsmackingly infuriating or unintentionally hilarious. The latter was the case at a town hall in her district over the weekend, in which the freshman Congresswoman was discussing elections and how Republicans supposedly react to them when they lose – and when they win.
David Rutz at the Free Beacon reports:
Ocasio-Cortez said during her appearance last weekend that Republicans were routinely denying election results, which she called a hallmark of “tyranny.” A number of prominent members of her own party have said that fraud and cheating marred, or even invalidated, Democrats’ recent gubernatorial losses in Georgia and Florida, as well as Hillary Clinton’s defeat in the 2016 presidential election.
“It’s quite tragic and it’s very sad that it’s devolved to the point that any election they lose is illegitimate, and any election they win means they can govern with impunity,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “That is almost the definition or one of the hallmark aspects of authoritarianism.”
It’s not clear if she was responding to a question or if she was just providing a random political rant to audience members. But either way, her remarks were hysterical when you consider they were made in the midst of her party’s relentless attempts at ousting President Trump because they didn’t like the outcome of the 2016 elections:
As Rutz correctly pointed out, the Democratic party has deliberately worked to undermine the integrity of our elections quite often over the last three years alone, including President Trump’s win in 2016 over Hillary Clinton, and the failed 2018 gubernatorial campaigns of Democrats Stacey Abrams (GA) and Andrew Gillum (FL).
But as we remember all too well, their declarations of election results as “illegitimate” go back way beyond 2016, as the 2000 election of George W. Bush reminds us.
Not only that, but it’s amusing that she talks about how Republicans allegedly treat elections they win as mandates to “govern with impunity”, considering after Democrats including her took over the House in 2019, many of them treated their election victories as a mandate to impeach Trump, and to ram through trillion dollar “progressive” policy ideas like the Green New Deal and Medicare for All.
As I’ve said before, if Democrats didn’t have double standards, they wouldn’t have any standards at all. AOC demonstrated that perfectly by what she said and did not say during her town hall last week. She’ll hold Republicans to one standard, while her own party is held to a completely different one – by both its members and a complicit mainstream media alike.
