Kira Davis wrote Friday about Beto O’Rourke’s official announcement that he is dropping his campaign for the Democratic nomination for president.

The writing had been on the wall for months as he struggled to meet the fundraising and polling requirements the DNC put in place to make the debates. He even acknowledged his campaign did not have the means to continue on in his announcement, which you can watch below:

O’Rourke made his final speech as a presidential candidate in Des Moines, Iowa, where hours later New York Times political reporter Katie Glueck spotted a table full of abandoned campaign items for his rallygoers, including a box of “cheer guides” that were supposed to be used to encourage attendees to enthusiastically chant their support for Beto. One of the “call and response” chants was similar to President Obama’s campaign theme back in 2008 of “Yes, we can”:

The cheer guide is also reminiscent of 2016 Republican candidate Jeb Bush urging an audience to “please clap” for him during a campaign speech in New Hampshire:

Like O’Rourke’s campaign, Bush’s attempt at winning the nomination for his party also collapsed due to lack of support and enthusiasm.

O’Rourke said in October that if he did not win the Democratic presidential nomination, he did not see a scenario where he would run for public office again. He made similar comments after his loss to Sen. Ted Cruz last year but went back on them. Let’s hope this time around he means it.
