Could Round 2 of Hillary vs. Trump be just around the corner?

Earlier this month, Rasmussen released a poll that showed a potential rematch between Clinton and President Trump would be “neck and neck” in terms of polling if she was in the race right now.

Around that same time, Trump took to the Twitter machine to tweak the failed 2016 Democratic presidential nominee by way of encouraging her to run again … but only under certain conditions:

I think that Crooked Hillary Clinton should enter the race to try and steal it away from Uber Left Elizabeth Warren. Only one condition. The Crooked one must explain all of her high crimes and misdemeanors including how & why she deleted 33,000 Emails AFTER getting “C” Subpoena!

Clinton posted an intriguing response to Trump, which led to speculation that perhaps she was weighing her options:

Don’t tempt me. Do your job.

Fast forward two weeks and here we are with stories published on the same day from the New York Times and the Washington Post that Clinton is now actually giving the thought some serious consideration.

First up, the report from the Times, which focused on concern from the Democratic establishment and big money donors about the electability of the current crop of candidates:

Mrs. Clinton and [former NYC Mayor Michael] Bloomberg have both told people privately in recent weeks that if they thought they could win, they would consider entering the primary — but that they were skeptical there would be an opening, according to Democrats who have spoken with them.

The Washington Post wrote a similar story:

That has helped propel speculation about Hillary Clinton, the 2016 party nominee, although aides say the likelihood of her seeking a rematch with Trump remains slim. Those close to Clinton, speaking on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to comment on her behalf, say she has felt vindicated over the past few weeks as Trump’s political difficulties have deepened.

“Ultimately, it’s unlikely she would do it,” said one person who has spoken with her. “But put it this way: It ain’t zero. And does she think about it all the time? Absolutely.”

As I’ve written before, obviously she’d be late to the game if she did decide to give it a go, considering we’re just a few months away from the first round of primaries and caucuses. But it would give her a chance at revenge for what she’s routinely claimed without evidence for years now now: That the 2016 election was “stolen” from her.

Don’t let the fact that Clinton herself hasn’t stated publicly one way or the other if she’s considering a run fool you. Even if she stated out loud that she had no interest, I wouldn’t trust her. Months in advance of her 2016 announcement she was telling the mainstream media she wasn’t going to run, but she ended up doing exactly that.

As annoying as it is to continue to hear her talk uninterrupted about how there was Russian collusion, that she would be president now if Trump hadn’t cheated, etc, her joining the presidential dance would add a lot of entertainment value to the race, especially if and when she came face to face the first time with Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, who she called a “Russian asset” last week.

Plus, the idea of Trump “livetweeting” any debates that included Clinton would be hilarious to see.

We’re also still firmly ensconced in the #MeToo era, which would be problematic for a potential Clinton campaign for reasons that are obvious to everyone.

That said, Clinton would love nothing more than to get a second go at Trump, even if it meant stepping on the toes of all of the other Democratic candidates who have poured blood, sweat, and tears into the race for months now (with some being at it for almost a year now). She figures she’s owed, she’s paid her dues, etc. just as she thought she was in 2008 and 2016.
