It seems like only yesterday that Democrat Rep. Jimmy Gomez (CA-34) was still trying to sell the idea that his troubles with the House Ethics Committee were no big deal.
Well, two days, if we're being more precise.
Gomez called a Committee investigation into allegations that he had inappropriate sexual contact with a congressional staffer nothing more than “personal mistakes” that were entirely consensual. He insisted he hadn’t broken any rules.
It may be more than just rules that were broken. A new allegation indicates he may have broken laws.
A witness who actually spoke to the Ethics Committee has blown a hole straight through Gomez’s carefully worded defense. Her lawyers claim that their client experienced sexual harassment and assault at the hands of the lawmaker.
“We represent one of the women who was interviewed by the House Committee on Ethics about her experience of sexual harassment and assault by Representative Jimmy Gomez,” attorneys Lisa Banks and Sarah Nesbitt said in a statement released Wednesday.
At least one party in this story did not view the incident as a casual fling.
“Contrary to Representative Gomez’s assertion in his statement, his actions were not ‘consensual in nature’ with respect to our client," the statement continues. "We fully expect that the House Committee on Ethics will come to the same conclusion in its investigation.”
The case just got a lot more serious.

The Jimmy Gomez case is now following a familiar and troubling pattern we’ve seen with several recent high-profile figures.
Just like Graham Platner (whose early reports of “unsettling” and physically threatening behavior later escalated into a full rape allegation) and Eric Swalwell (whose initial misconduct claims involving unsolicited messages and unwanted advances quickly grew into multiple sexual assault and rape accusations), and former Republican Rep. Tony Gonzales (whose early denials of an affair with a staffer later escalated into revelations of explicit text messages requesting nude photos and the staffer’s suicide) before him.
All three men tried to get ahead of the accusations before they eventually grew exponentially more serious. Platner fought tooth and nail but would eventually have to drop his Senate campaign in Maine.
Swalwell would have to drop out of his gubernatorial campaign in California and resign his seat in the House. It was later revealed he had admitted to the FBI to having multiple sexual encounters with a Chinese spy.
Gonzales tried to cling to his seat by fighting through a primary, only to admit the relationship and abandon his reelection bid once the ethics probe and explicit texts made his position untenable.
Gomez's troubles are seemingly just beginning. Will it end the same way?

As RedState’s Ben Smith reported, the allegations circling Gomez, if proven true, would set off hypocrisy alarm bells at a nuclear level. He resigned as Swalwell's campaign co-chair after the heat grew too much, demanding his colleague face "full accountability without doubt, distraction, or delay."
And he finds himself wrapped up in these sordid allegations as founder of the Congressional Dads Caucus, which seeks to help fathers "step up at home" and "advocate for their families."
The same man who demanded “full accountability" for others is now hoping the same standard somehow won’t apply to him.
How long before Gomez is forced to confront the same choice his colleagues ultimately faced?
