‘Hard for Any Democrat to Win’: Top Dem Gives the Game Away on SAVE America Act

Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) has let the mask slip, something we've grown accustomed to when it comes to the party of accidental admissions.

Slotkin, in a speech to the Indiana Democratic Party Convention, openly admitted that the SAVE America Act—with its strict voter ID and proof-of-citizenship requirements—would make it very difficult for her party to achieve future electoral victories.

"The other thing that we blocked yesterday was the SAVE (America) Act, right?" she said to a cheering throng of resistance warriors. "Which would literally allow this administration to rig our democracy."

Slotkin added that, "It would be hard for any Democrat in any state to win any election."

Soak that in for just a moment. Voter ID and proof that you are a legal citizen would make it difficult for Democrats to win ANY election. What a telling statement, Ms. Slotkin.

That’s not just a slip of the tongue. It’s a backhanded confession that Democrats know their political fortunes depend on keeping election rules as loose as possible.

What are they so afraid of? At its core, the SAVE America Act is a straightforward attempt to bring some basic security to federal elections. It would require voters to show documentary proof of U.S. citizenship—such as a passport, birth certificate, or REAL ID-compliant document—when registering to vote in federal races.

It also mandates a valid photo ID (driver’s license, passport, military ID, etc.) at the polls or when mailing in a ballot.

Slotkin might be surprised to find herself on the same page here as President Trump, who has repeatedly pushed Senate Republicans to grow a spine, nuke the filibuster before the Democrats do it after the midterms, and reap the rewards, saying: "We do that, we’re not gonna lose an election for a hundred years."

Democrats have fought the SAVE America Act tooth and nail. The Republicans don't fight anything tooth and nail.

They should take note. Slotkin admits that her party views basic election safeguards as a direct threat to its success.

None of it is a radical idea by any stretch. The numbers back up the fact that voter ID is popular—polls consistently show 70 to 80 percent of Americans, including majorities of Democrats and independents, support requiring photo identification to vote.

Democrats’ reflexive opposition shows they are perfectly content with the current system. If anything, they would like rules and restrictions loosened further. But they'd be happy to keep things status quo.

Republicans need to ram the SAVE America Act through and restore confidence in our elections. Any means necessary. Voters deserve to know their vote actually counts.
