FBI Director Chris Wray announced on Friday that the bureau has ordered an internal review of the case against Gen. Michael Flynn to examine if they broke any regulations or if they “engaged in any misconduct” in the case against him.

“FBI Director Christopher Wray today ordered the Bureau’s Inspection Division to conduct an after-action review of the Michael Flynn investigation,” the bureau said in a statement.

The review will be handled by the bureau’s Inspection Division, the FBI said. That division is similar to an internal affairs office in a police department.

The bureau said the “after-action review” will have a two-fold purpose: evaluating the FBI’s role in the case and determining whether any “current employees engaged in misconduct,” as well as identifying whether any “improvements” might be warranted to FBI procedures.

“Although the FBI does not have the prosecutorial authority to bring a criminal case, the Inspection Division can and will evaluate whether any current onboard employees engaged in actions that might warrant disciplinary measures,” the FBI said.

Blockbuster FBI internal notes had previously indicated an effort by the FBI to target Flynn to either prosecute him or get him fired, without a legitimate criminal predicate for going after him, according to Attorney General William Barr.

The notes broke open the case and the Department of Justice moved to dismiss the case. But Judge Emmet Sullivan has so far acted in an unprecedented fashion, not granting the uncontested motion to dismiss the matter by both sides and asking for amicus briefing in a criminal case, including asking for a brief in opposition to the DOJ’s motion from retired Judge John Gleeson who has already exhibited a bias in the case. Now the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit has asked Sullivan to justify his actions in the case to them within ten days. Flynn’s attorney has petitioned them to grant the dismissal, stop the amicus briefing and remove the case from Sullivan if it isn’t dismissed.

The DOJ is also reviewing the actions of the FBI in the case with Jeff Jensen, the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Missouri, at the helm. The FBI said their effort will “complement” Jensen’s efforts.

“The after-action review will complement the already substantial assistance the FBI has been providing to U.S. Attorney Jeff Jensen in connection with his work on the Flynn case,” the FBI said. “Under Director Wray’s leadership, the FBI has been fully transparent and cooperative with Mr. Jensen, and the FBI’s help has included providing special agents to assist Mr. Jensen in the fact-finding process.”

Finally feels like most of the gears are firing to right the ship that the Obama administration so set adrift.
