A video clip of Joe Biden at a campaign event on December 28 in Iowa is getting a lot of play on social media on Sunday and it’s easy to see why.
A young man in the audience asked Biden about Obamacare.
From Daily Wire:
During the run-up to the passage of Obamacare, President Obama promised my father that if he likes his plan, he can keep his plan, and that his insurance will be cheaper. After passage, his plan was no longer allowed and his insurance costs doubled. Since you supported the plan, were you lying to my dad? Or did you not understand the bill you supported?
Excellent question.
Biden’s initial response is not quite intelligible, and you can decide what he says, but it sounds a lot like “lying dog-face pony show.”
He jokes first about how he would have added a public option to Obamacare, but that wouldn’t have been allowed in the plan. Then he tried to convince the young man that costs had “gone down,” despite the young man saying costs for his father had doubled. Biden’s comment would come as a surprise to the many others who also now have to pay more, many having higher deductibles as well.
Then he goes on to say that people should get to keep their plans if they like them. Oh. Too bad they lied to us about that, in what Politifact called the biggest lie of 2013. But trust him now, he’ll make sure you get to keep your plan.
He seemed to try to circle back to answer the young man.
We’ve changed a lot of things for the better, and we’ve tried under five Democratic presidents, tried to change those things, and people say, “Well Biden, why now do you think you can add the public option and why can you further subsidize it?”
Well, because people, there’s two ways people know when something is important. One, when it’s so clear when it’s passed that everybody understands it – and no one did understand Obamacare, including the way it was rolled out.
And the gentleman’s right, he said, “You could keep your doctor if you wanted to,” and you couldn’t keep your doctor if you wanted to necessarily. He’s dead right about that. But the fact is that when something’s taken away, when you – people didn’t know. I used to say to President Obama, “Mr. President, why don’t you take a victory lap? You got this passed. Let people know exactly what’s happened.”
…And he’d say, “We don’t have time to take a victory lap. We have too many things we have to do.” So people didn’t know, and we lost the House of Representatives after that passed. And people attributed to the fact that Obamacare passed and that was one of the arguments made, whether it’s true or not.
Here’s the full clip. For those that can’t take over eight minutes of Biden, the paragraph above is at 5:45.
“No one did understand Obamacare, including the way it was rolled out.” But we were too busy to try to explain how we were going to take your plan and lie to you that we weren’t? Yes, people likely wouldn’t “understand” when you tell them one thing when you’re trying to sell it and then that ends up not being the case.
And how is that much of an answer to the young man? We were too busy to explain we were really lying to you? On top of that, you’re still not explaining why his father’s costs went up as did the costs of many others when they were also promised they would go down? What happened to that magical $2500 savings that was also promised by Barack Obama?
The bottom line was that they said anything they needed to get it passed, to get what they wanted and Biden is doing that again now.
