In this episode of "The No Longer Hallowed Halls of Academia: People's Republic of Oregon Edition"...
With apologies to conservative Oregonians and other sane residents of the Beaver State, the rabid Left continues to thrive in one of the most breathtaking — geographically speaking — states in America.
Unfortunately, the stench of the metastasis of radical leftism in Portland and neighboring Gresham, along with dedicated left-leaning hubs like Corvallis and Eugene, garners national headlines — not Crater Lake, Mt. Hood, and the spectacular Columbia River Gorge.
In this example, Oregon State University now requires students to complete “Difference, Power and Oppression” (DPO) courses as part of its Core Education curriculum.
That’s right, gang:
Alongside the traditional academic essentials, students get the opportunity to study “Difference, Power and Oppression Foundations” and “Difference, Power and Oppression Advanced”— because nothing quite says "higher education" like making oppression a two-course mandatory "learning" (indoctrination) requirement.
The description of the advanced courses explains the reasoning for the requirement:
The inequitable distribution of social, economic, and political power in the United States and globally is sustained through systems of oppression, which represent a variety of discriminatory institutional beliefs and practices. These beliefs and practices obscure the origins and operations of systemic oppression in daily life, such that this inequitable power distribution is assumed to be the natural order.
What the hell does that even mean?
And raise your hand if you believe America is plagued by "operations of systemic oppression in daily life, such that this inequitable power distribution is assumed to be the natural order."
Not sick enough?
Here ya go — according to the university's website:
[The core requirement] engages students in critical reflection on the complexity of the structures, institutions, and ideologies that sustain systemic oppression, discrimination, and the inequitable distribution of systemic power and resources within and across communities.
Such examinations will enhance and promote responsible, ethical, and anti-racist engagement in our diverse university community and society in the United States and beyond.
Did I mention that professors must complete specialized training to teach DPO courses?
In addition to “difference, power, and oppression,” participants in the DPO Academy learn about “feminist and critical pedagogies” and “fundamentals of curriculum transformation.” But, hey — I'm sure those "educators" gleefully accepted the assignment.

The Bottom Line
Rather than allowing students to choose their own courses of interest — while perhaps offering the DPO madness as electives for those who choose to take them, OSU's faculty and administration is saying students must take DPO classes because they expect them to be able to “demonstrate, by using social justice theories,” how historical constructions of racism, and other forms of “systemic oppression” are destroying America.
Call me a right-wing whack job, but all of the above sounds a tad bit Marxism-ish to me.
