John Bolton Explains Why Trump Wants Russia-Ukraine Ceasefire. Spoiler: It's Delusional.

Former Trump National Security Advisor John Bolton — hardly a fan of the president, these days — trotted over to CNN (where else?) on Thursday to explain to equally TDS-riddled "The Source" anchor Kaitlan Collins why he believes Trump really wants a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in their seemingly never-ending war.

As I suggested in the headline, Bolton's illogical logic was totally delusional.

As Bolton sees it (emphasis, mine):

The pressure that Trump has put on for a ceasefire is motivated by one thing: Trump's desire for good publicity and to buttress his case to get a Nobel Peace Prize. You want a ceasefire between two warring parties? They need to decide it.

Did I mention that Bolton appeared a bit tightly wound as he spoke?

Couple of thoughts.

History has often shown that a mediator between two warring countries has been the most effective way to bring both sides to the table, which is not dissimilar to a married couple seeking to save their marriage through the use of a marriage counselor to help them do so. Other examples abound. Yet Bolton so loathes Trump that, like all Trump haters, he sees everything about this president through TDS-riddled glasses.

Clearly, nothing the Biden-Harris administration did came anywhere close to getting Ukraine and Russia together to at least try to hammer out a ceasefire, and ultimately an end to the devastating war.

On the contrary, Biden's open-checkbook policy, every time Zelensky asked for (demanded) more U.S. aid, only served to embolden the Ukrainian strongman and his delusional belief that his forces could ultimately prevail over Putin's Russian Army.

Also on Thursday, Bolton told The Kyiv Independent:

Trump thinks Putin is his friend. He trusts Putin. Putin thinks Trump is an easy mark.

Bolton explained:

As a former KGB agent, Putin knows exactly how to manipulate him, and I think that's what he's been doing since the inauguration, if not before.

And on Wednesday, Bolton told CNN's Wolf Blitzer he doesn't believe a ceasefire deal with Russia is “in Ukraine’s interest,” but that Zelensky “had to agree” to the U.S. framework after his disastrous Oval Office meeting with Trump in February.

I think Zelensky had to agree to the ceasefire in Saudi Arabia because he needed to get U.S. military assistance, intelligence assistance, turned back on. He had to try and repair the damage from the debacle in the Oval Office. So, of course, he agreed to it, and he did get the military assistance turned back on.

Bolton also said Putin has no incentive to negotiate:

Well, I certainly wouldn’t trust Russia to negotiate in good faith, and up until now — because Donald Trump has effectively flipped the American position to be supportive of Russia — the Russians have had no incentive to negotiate.

In one respect, Bolton was right.

While Trump continues to claim Putin wants peace, the Russian dictator has shown throughout his more than 25 years in power that raging war against his neighbors — and conquering strategic land and resources — has been his primary desire. Remember, we're talking about a guy who in 2005 declared that the collapse of the Soviet Union was "the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the century.”

In another perhaps more relevant respect, Bolton's loathing of Trump renders him incapable of objective analysis of anything America's 47th president says or does.

The Bottom Line

The Trump administration finds itself between a rock and a hard place. While Zelensky is far from a saint, placing faith in Putin has proved in the past to be a fool's game.

That said, it's past time for  America to stop bankrolling Zelensky and a war that, regardless of the outcome, won't be a win for either side.
