The war between Israel and Palestinian militants, especially Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad, began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched a land, sea, and air assault on Israel from the Gaza Strip. The horrific attack resulted in more than 1,200 deaths, primarily Israeli citizens, making it the deadliest day for Israel since its independence in 1948.
Now, more than 11 months later, the conflict seems to have become a war of attrition for Hamas.
Khaled Meshal, one of Hamas's most senior leaders, expressed confidence in an interview published in the New York Times on Tuesday that the Biden-Harris administration will allow the Palestinian terrorist group to remain in control of Gaza. Raise your hand if you’re shocked.
Referring to the initial U.S. position, Meshal said:
'The Israeli-American vision wasn’t talking about the day after the war, but the day after Hamas," Meshal said, referring to the initial U.S. position. [Now] "they’re practically recognizing Hamas. Hamas has the upper hand. It has remained steadfast and brought the Israeli military to a state of attrition."
To be fair, the Biden-Harris administration has remained steadfast, as well — at throwing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Jewish state under the bus at every opportunity.
Ominously, some current and former Israeli security officials also believe that Hamas is unlikely to be defeated in the war, including Major General Gadi Shamni, a former commander of the Israeli military’s Gaza division, who said:
Hamas is winning this war. Our soldiers are winning every tactical encounter with Hamas, but we’re losing the war, and in a big way.
That's a profound statement coming from a former officer of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

As the Biden-Harris administration and the majority of Democrat lawmakers, along with the United Nations and much of the rest of the world, continue to pressure Israel to end the war with Hamas before achieving Netanyahu’s stated goal of wiping out the terrorist group, Shamni warned:
There’s no one that can challenge Hamas there after Israeli forces leave.
Yet, in June, Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, the Israeli military spokesman, dismissed Netanyahu’s belief that Hamas can be completely destroyed.
Hamas is an idea. Those who think we can make Hamas disappear are wrong. The thought that it is possible to destroy Hamas, to make Hamas vanish — that is throwing sand in the eyes of the public.
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant in August echoed Hagari’s position, describing Netanyahu’s “total victory” goal as “nonsense.” And some Israeli security officials have said the battle with Hamas will be left for their children. All of this, coupled with the Biden-Harris administration undermining Netanyahu at every turn, puts the Israeli prime minister and his country in a tough spot.
Here's more:
Hamas’s reasoning is simple — winning simply means surviving and, at least for now, the group has managed to do that, even if it is severely weakened.
In the interview, Meshal made clear that Hamas officials are not in a rush to conclude a cease-fire with Israel at any price, and will not give up on their main demands for an end to the war and an Israeli withdrawal.
Independent analysts have made similar assessments about Hamas’s priorities. “They completely feel time is on their side,” said Ghaith al-Omari, an expert on Palestinian affairs. “They think they’re the only game in town.”
And why shouldn't Hamas leaders think that?
At the beginning of the war, in the immediate aftermath of the horrendous October 7 attack, Biden, at least publicly, expressed a similar position to that of Netanyahu: that Hamas should be eliminated. But as the 2024 presidential election campaign kicked into gear, Biden pandered more and more to Muslim voters and stopped talking about eradicating the terrorist group.
So, if I'm Hamas, with the possibility that Kamala Harris could be elected President of the United States in November, why wouldn't I just sit tight?
