U.N. Head Guterres Calls for Total Fossil Fuel 'Phaseout' - Then Jets Off to Climate Conference

Other than the United Nations' despicable treatment of Israel, there's nothing the world body is more hypocritical about than climate change — purported anthropomorphic (human-caused) climate change ("global warming"), to be precise. For the latest example, we need to look no further than the U.N. Secretary-General, António Guterres.

Call it bad timing.

Guterres hysterically backed a complete fossil fuel “phaseout” on Thursday, just before jetting off to the two-week COP 28 climate conference in oil-rich Dubai — where he will undoubtedly gnash his teeth with upwards of 70,000 other climate fanatics.

"Obviously, I am strongly in favor of language that includes (a) phaseout, even with a reasonable time framework," Guterres told France's AFP before boarding his jet.

I think it would be a pity if we would stay in a vague and noncommittal 'phase-down' whose real meaning would not be obvious for anybody. [We] cannot stop tomorrow.

We need to do it in an organized way and we need to make sure that we have a time framework that is simultaneously credible but at the same time is in line with our objective to keep the temperature rise at 1.5 degrees.

Look, I'm no Al Gore, John Kerry, or Leo DiCaprio [sarc], but Guterres and like-minded climate alarmists are now calling for the complete elimination of the use of fossil fuels on the planet — for the sake of 1.5 degrees. Just me, or does it strike you as more than a bit of overkill?

Given the irony of the climate conference taking place in the oil-rich United Emirates Republics, Guterres said he has a "special responsibility" to influence COP 28 president Sultan Al Jaber, an Emirati official and CEO of "the national oil company who has become embroiled in accusations of conflicts of interest."

He is of course linked to the oil business in his activities, but also linked to renewables, I think it creates with him a special responsibility. [He is in a better position to convince the oil industry that the] solution of the climate problems requires the phase-out of fossil fuels" [than] if he was member of [an ] NGO with a very solid pro-climate record.

"That will give him an opportunity to prove all those that accuse him [are] wrong," added Guterres.

Uh-huh. So Jaber is supposed to convince all of his equally rich-beyond-imagination pals in the oil-wealthy UAE that shutting down their oil-producing industry — completely — would be a wise thing to do.

António Guterres is yet another example of the effects of a complete fixation on a problem that doesn't exist — at least nowhere near the ridiculous "existential threat to mankind" level.

What Do the Climate Alarmists Propose Instead of Fossil Fuels?

Triple the production of "renewable energy." Here's Guterres:

We need to triple renewable at the global level. We have the potential, the technologies, the capacity, and the money — because the money is available, it's a question of making sure it goes in the right direction — to do what is necessary, not only to keep the 1.5 degrees alive, but alive and well.

The only thing that is still lacking is political will," he said, adding that the upcoming gathering will have to make the world realize that we are really moving in a very wrong direction still.

Not to nitpick, Mr. Secretary-General, but another thing stopping the complete elimination of the fossil fuel industry is that there remains a sufficient degree of sanity on the planet. For now, anyway.
