Here’s an important question for you: If an arsonist were trying to burn down your house, do you A) make it easier by just handing him the gasoline, or B) do everything in your power to extinguish the pyromaniac’s flame? If you answered “B,” then you understand the fight that is currently going on in the Senate over the filibuster and why Republicans must “not cede any ground to the Democrats…“

Upset Democrats and their union bosses are trying to change the rules on Senate filibusters and, rather than using their standard terms of “economic and social justice,” they’re using a mom-and-apple-pie claim about “fairness.” They’ve designed their campaign messaging to portray ‘filibuster reform’ as an issue of GOP “abuse” (see Hogan’s take here) versus simple “democracy” in the Senate. However, the real issue of filibuster reform goes much deeper, with much longer-lasting ramifications. Simply put, as the official sock puppets of unions bosses and other statists, the Democrats attempt to remove the filibuster is nothing more than an effort to remove the last fire extinguisher from the building so the Left can burn down the building. And, let there be no mistake, burning it down is their sole goal.

Unlike so many on the Right, the Left has longer-range vision than a mere election cycle or two. The Left knows that politics are cyclical, as is the control of the nation’s capital. Where the Right may think about the next election cycle, the Left is thinking two, three or more election cycles down the road. While the Right thinks of campaigns and agendas in fits and starts, the Left thinks in terms of the Constant Campaign in both agenda and politics. In fact, the Left is building the campaign now for 2012—they’re banking on the fact that 1) they can use the Tea-Party elected Congress as fodder for their Alinksy-type messaging, 2) the fervor of the Tea Party movement will wane, 3) the in-fighting on the Right will lead to irreconcilable and exploitable differences and, 4) they can demonize the new Congress enough to regain independents. Whose pulling the strings?

If you think Senators Klobuchar, Udall, Merkely, or even Reid and Harkin are pulling the strings on filibuster reform, you’re wrong. They are merely the prophylactic sock-puppet faces behind whom a wide coalition of unions and other statists exist. After independently griping about filibusters since 2009, the group was formally launched late last year, as noted by the Marxist website People’s World. The group has set up a website and even sent a letter to the Senate signed by the “who’s who” of the American Left

To what end?

It has been no secret that there are two things (in addition to ObamaCare) that the Left has needed to radically transform America forever. The first and primary weapon has been and continues to be the delusionally-dubbed Employee Free Choice Act. True, EFCA is comatose for now and the unions are using the NLRB to do all they can to enact it through regulatory fiat, again, their goal is more long-term.

Modernizing the nation’s labor law is critical to expanding union membership—which in turn, will ensure conservatives become a permanent minority, as newly-empowered workers actively engage in political action and demand a new way of doing the nation’s business, like creating an economy that rewards Main Street and not just Wall Street. The freedom to form unions and bargain is critical to the progressive movement—when workers have the tools they need to build a better life, they have the power to improve their communities and the solidarity to make progressive political change throughout the nation.

As long as Democrats are bought and paid for by union bosses, their fight to push EFCA through by any means possible will not end. Moreover, as there is no way for the NLRB to force mandatory arbitration (government-imposed contracts) on employers and employees, the unions will continue seeking EFCA (or something similar) through legislation which, at this point, will fail, but may not longer-term.

The second thing that the Left needs to destroy the Right is amnesty for illegals, or its gateway drug, the Dream Act. Amnesty, as the Left acknowledges, means millions of new voters to steal redistribute America’s wealth.

In both of these cases, ending the filibuster is vitally important to the Left. For anyone on the Right to presuppose it is a mere fight over rules is to foolishly fall into a trap of the Left’s making. This is why the GOP must not bend or compromise on letting go of the filibuster. It is the last extinguisher left in the building.
