The 1984ing of America is officially in full swing.
With news of a COVID vaccine on the horizon, the nation’s largest concert ticket vendor has begun work on an app that would verify the vaccination of every potential ticket buyer and track their COVID tests before being allowed to enter a venue.
Billboard Magazine reports that the plan is still in its infancy, but hopes to use a combination of the Ticketmaster app itself, online health information companies and vaccine providers.
Here’s how it would work, if approved: After purchasing a ticket for a concert, fans would need to verify that they have already been vaccinated (which would provide approximately one year of COVID-19 protection) or test negative for coronavirus approximately 24 to 72 hours prior to the concert. The length of coverage a test would provide would be governed by regional health authorities — if attendees of a Friday night concert had to be tested 48 hours in advance, most could start the testing process the day before the event. If it was a 24-hour window, most people would likely be tested the same day of the event at a lab or a health clinic.
Once the test was complete, the fan would instruct the lab to deliver the results to their health pass company, like CLEAR or IBM. If the tests were negative, or the fan was vaccinated, the health pass company would verify the attendee’s COVID-19 status to Ticketmaster, which would then issue the fan the credentials needed to access the event. If a fan tested positive or didn’t take a test to verify their status, they would not be granted access to the event. There are still many details to work out, but the goal of the program is for fans to take care of vaccines and testing prior to the concert and not show up hoping to be tested onsite.
Well, that’s not creepy at all.
Billboard claims Ticketmaster will not have access to patient files, but rather will receive a simple confirmation as to test/vaccine status.
It is astonishing how far these goalposts have shifted with complete acceptance of the public at large. Fifteen Thirty days to slow the spread has turned into nine months. We never agreed to lockdown until the virus magically disappeared. The agreement was to ramp up health resources. That has been done. In fact, the untold success story of this virus is how quickly the Trump administration moved to shift resources, ramp up PPE production and get ventilators out to every state in need. We even mobilized military hospital ships to accommodate the carnage that never came to fruition.
Now we’re being told that in order to return to business and life, we first must inject something into our bodies that we may or may not be comfortable with. Regardless of the private vs. public sector nuances, it seems like a good constitutional lawyer could have a field day with this type of monitoring.
However, that shouldn’t even be necessary. A vaccine is not a cure and creating second-class citizens based on health status is a terrifying precedent to set. For all those out there who may be saying right now, “It’s just a test. It’s just a harmless vaccine. If it gets us back to business, what’s the big deal?”, let me ask you this:
Where does it end?
The people you trust aren’t always going to be in charge. Our constitutional republic is designed to perform accordingly…if we let it. That is how you protect freedom.
If you don’t feel safe being in crowds, stay home. The healthy are not the enemy. This must stop now before it’s too late to pull back from the brink of 1984 in 2020.
