California's Assault on Crisis Pregnancy Centers

If anything is a threat to the pro-abortion movement, it’s the existence of crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs) across the nation. Those who find themselves inside such a place believe options are limited and time is of the essence. No matter how they became pregnant, they are in need of and proactively seeking help for themselves and their unborn child. Compassion is key when dealing with women and young girls whose situations have left them scared, possibly financially incapable, and many times, alone.

As reported in a 2013 New York Times article, crisis pregnancy centers outrank the number of abortion clinics nationwide.

Pregnancy centers, while not new, now number about 2,500, compared with about 1,800 abortion providers. Abortion rights advocates have long called some of their approaches deceptive or manipulative. Medical and other experts say some dispense scientifically flawed information, exaggerating abortion’s risks.

Because CPCs overwhelmingly outnumber abortion providers, bullies like NARAL are in a hurry to combat the effects of these centers. This has resulted in a NARAL-sponsored bill in the California legislature known as AB775, the “Reproductive FACT Act”. As reported in an April LifeNews article, the bill:

…would require all pregnancy centers to promote abortions to their clients. There is no conscience clause or opt out for centers that provide pregnant women assistance without abortions or abortion referrals. Failure to comply carries a $500 fine for first offense and $1,000 for each subsequent offense. The bill authorizes the Attorney General, city attorney, or county counsel to impose the civil fines.

What do we expect from a bill supported by NARAL, whose relevancy is directly tied to the life-ending procedure of abortion? Protecting abortion at all costs is a cornerstone of their bloodthirsty existence. CPCs disrupt their bottom line and color their supposed mission of “freedom” by sharing the very real truth of abortion. Detailing what occurs to the unborn child, and what the emotional & physical tolls would be on the mother, is an absolute must. CPCs are the first line of defense in the decades-long fight against the abortion holocaust, and it is imperative that their influence be protected.

I had the privilege of speaking with a woman who works for a crisis pregnancy center in Illinois. In regards to the knowledge of abortion young people they educate in the schools have, and the women and girls who come to their center already possess, she shared:

I teach thousands of 7th graders and we talk about pregnancy options. I always ask what the options are and almost all the students answer “abortion, adoption, and keeping it” (which we call parenting). We do explain how abortion does take a life, and that it does cause emotional harm to many women. If a client came in to the center and tested positive and had no idea what the options were, we would tell them the three options and discuss each with them. They have heard that abortion is an easy quick fix to their problem, but don’t understand how it can affect them emotionally, so we help them better understand that aspect.

While it’s clear from an insider’s perspective that these clinics share necessary truth of each pregnancy option, the radical, pro-abort Left seeks to taint their role. As that bastion of the ridiculous known as Think Progress reported of CPCs:

However, they don’t actually offer birth control or abortion services. They are largely in the business of providing biased counseling designed to convince women to continue their pregnancies. In order to do that, their staff often imparts blatantly false medical misinformation — downplaying the effectiveness of birth control, exaggerating the medical risk of abortion, and emphasizing shame-based messages about the dangers of having sex outside of marriage.

The pro-abort Left is terrified of truth. The truth that is shared at these crisis pregnancy centers, and most importantly, the different choices the women who are presented with this truth might make. Their money-making abortion clinics will have less clients, and their message will continue to be drowned out by the inescapable reality of new life.

A California-based crisis pregnancy center known as Birth Choice of Temecula lists the no-cost services they offer on their website. They include:

  • No Cost Pregnancy Tests
  • Limited, No Cost Ultrasound (Upon Approval)
  • Confidential Discussion with our Client Advocates
  • Information on Abortion and Abortion Alternatives
  • Adoption Information
  • Childbirth & Parenting Information
  • Abstinence Information and Education
  • STD Information and Education
  • Maternity Home Information
  • Lending Library of Books and Videos
  • Post Abortion Healing Support
  • Mommy and Baby Boutique, On Site. Once a Month Visits for:
      • Clothing 0-24 months
      • Diapers and Wipes
      • Baby Food and Formula

These services are not rare, they are the norm if you visit crisis pregnancy centers not just in California, but around the country. They focus on educating their clients as to all options available to them. They focus on providing pros & cons for adoption, parenting, abortion, STDs, and abstinence. They focus on providing new mothers with clothing and supplies needed to care for their child. They focus on aiding in the healing process for women who have chosen abortion, who are struggling with their decision, and who need emotional support. When I look at the breadth of services offered, it is no wonder NARAL, and other coercive agencies, seek to restrict the freedoms that CPCs currently enjoy. Crisis pregnancy centers offer a combination of truth-based education, necessities for new mothers, and healing for post-abortion reality. They serve as an oasis in a society which deems too many unborn children as unwanted and labels abortion as “reproductive health”.

Crisis pregnancy centers meet women where they are, in the midst of uncertainty and turmoil. California’s AB775 bill is nothing but the big business of abortion stomping its feet in the legislature because it is outnumbered by CPCs, offers less than CPCs, and is losing to CPCs. NARAL claims to care about women, but in reality they only care about their bottom line. Their continuing mission is to misinform and ultimately destroy.
