Greta Thunberg accused Israel of harsh treatment while being detained at Ketziot prison, and another member of the flotilla was arrested for biting a medical worker. Here are the details.

The activists from the Global Sumud flotilla were taken to the maximum-security Ketziot Prison for processing. Ketziot is a maximum-security prison in the middle of the desert, 30 miles southwest of Be'er-Sheva and 4.5 miles from the Egyptian border. The prison houses many convicted Hamas terrorists.

On September 5, while being detained at Ketziot Prison, 56-year-old Reyes Rigo Serviá and another unnamed activist refused to leave their cell for their mandatory medical examinations. Serviá and the other activist lay on the floor and held onto each other with one arm while grabbing metal bars with their other arms. The two activists kicked at prison staff who were trying to take them for their medical examination. After the examination, Serviá bit the left hand of a dental assistant who was escorting her back to her cell. The dental assistant required medical treatment and a tetanus shot as a result of the bite.

The medical staff member sustained minor injuries and received local treatment. The Israel Police were called to the scene to handle the attacker.

Servia was transferred from Ketziot Prison to the Segev Shalom police station to be interrogated. Segev Shalom is a small Bedouin town of about 15,000, five miles southeast of Be'er-Sheva. Servia appeared before Judge Shosh Shitrit in a Beersheba court and was remanded for three more days in prison while the police conduct a thorough investigation of the incident. It is possible that Servia will receive a longer prison sentence or be deported back to her home country.

According to the Spanish newspaper El País, Serviá is an acupuncture therapist who currently lives in the city of Palma de Mallorca, on the island of Mallorca, Spain. Serviá is affiliated with several international human rights organizations and has lived in many different countries throughout Europe and Asia prior to residing in Palma de Mallorca.

El País quoted Serviá earlier in the week as follows: "I joined the flotilla out of humanity and solidarity. Silence is complicity, and given institutional inaction, civil society unfortunately must act. Just as the International Brigades came to defend freedom during Spain’s civil war between 1936 and 1939, now it’s our turn to do the same for Palestine."

Israel requires a mandatory medical examination of any individual prior to his or her deportation. The purpose of the examination is to determine whether the individual is medically fit to fly and whether any in‑flight medical emergencies would arise during his or her deportation. Israel's Patients' Rights Law forbids the deportation of any individual if he or she faces a medical emergency. The law defines a medical emergency as "circumstances in which a person is in immediate danger to his life or there is an immediate danger that a person will be caused an irreversible severe disability if he is not given urgent medical treatment" (translation from Hebrew as published by the Decker, Pex, Levi Law Firm). Therefore, the medical examinations are performed to ensure there is no violation of the law during deportation.

Prior to her deportation, Greta Thunberg accused Israel of subjecting her to harsh treatment. According to The Guardian in its 'exclusive' report, Thunberg accused Israel of detaining her in a cell infested with bed bugs and forcing her to hold flags while her picture was taken. The Guardian admits that the identity of the flags is unknown.

An official with the Swedish Foreign Ministry visited Thunberg in prison. The Guardian claims to have seen an email sent by the Swedish Foreign Ministry to people close to Thunberg. According to the outlet, the email reads: "The embassy has been able to meet with Greta. She informed of dehydration [sic]. She has received insufficient amounts of both water and food. She also stated that she had developed rashes, which she suspects were caused by bedbugs. She spoke of harsh treatment and said she had been sitting for long periods on hard surfaces."

The email continues, "Another detainee reportedly told another embassy that they had seen her [Thunberg] being forced to hold flags while pictures were taken. She wondered whether images of her had been distributed."

Ersin Çelik, another activist from the Global Sumud flotilla, told Turkey's state-run national news agency Anadolu, "They dragged little Greta [Thunberg] by her hair before our eyes, beat her, and forced her to kiss the Israeli flag. They did everything imaginable to her, as a warning to others." Lorenzo D’Agostino, a freelance journalist who was part of the Global Sumud flotilla, told Anadolu that Thunberg was "wrapped in the Israeli flag and paraded like a trophy."

In response to the allegations by Thunberg, Israel's Foreign Ministry posted the following statement on X: "The claims regarding the mistreatment of Greta Thunberg and other detainees from the Hamas–Sumud flotilla are brazen lies. All the detainees’ legal rights are fully upheld. Interestingly enough, Greta herself and other detainees refused to expedite their deportation and insisted on prolonging their stay in custody. Greta also did not complain to the Israeli authorities about any of these ludicrous and baseless allegations, because they never occurred."

Just over two hours later, Israel's Foreign Ministry posted the following additional information: "All the legal rights of the participants in this PR stunt were and will continue to be fully upheld. The lies they are spreading are part of their pre-planned fake news campaign. The only violent incident came from a Hamas–Sumud provocateur who bit a female medical staff member of Ketziot Prison. Don’t believe the fake news they are spreading. Attached are photos of Greta and other participants in this PR stunt at the airport before being deported."

After searching all 42 vessels, Israel's Foreign Ministry updated the facts regarding the aid carried by the flotilla. The following statement was released on X: "No wonder the fake-aid Hamas–Sumud flotilla rejected all the proposals from Israel, Italy, and Greece to peacefully unload the aid for Gaza in one of the regional ports: after checking all the ships and yachts of the flotilla, the total 'aid' we found amounted to barely 2 tons across 42 vessels. This amounts to less than one-tenth of a single aid truck! For comparison:

• A single aid truck entering Gaza carries about 20 tons of aid.

• Around 300 aid trucks enter Gaza every day.

The Hamas–Sumud flotilla was nothing more than a publicity stunt."

Today, Israeli authorities finally deported Greta Thunberg and 170 members of the Global Sumud flotilla back to Greece and Slovakia. Israel insisted that the deportation flights were paid for by the activists' respective foreign governments and not by Israel.
