Mexican President Pretty Adamant They Aren't Paying for a Wall

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto has all but vowed that his country will not pay for a border wall between the U.S. and Mexico, and Wednesday he reaffirmed that message in a video posted to social media. The video comes just hours after President Donald Trump said that Mexico will pay for the wall through any deals the U.S. makes with Mexico – the cost will simply be taken out of the various agreements the nations make.

Nieto disagrees.

“Mexico does not believe in walls. I’ve said time again; Mexico will not pay for any wall,” he said in a video statement posted to Twitter and translated by CNN from Spanish.

Peña Nieto said he would wait for a final report from his top officials who arrived in Washington Wednesday to meet with the Trump administration, and previous meetings with Mexican legislators, before deciding which steps he would take next.

Peña Nieto also said he had ordered government agencies to step up protection for immigrants.

“I’ve asked for the minister of Foreign Relations to re-enforce protection measures to our citizens,” he said. He added that the 50 Mexican Consulates in the US will be used to defend the rights of immigrants in the country. He also issued a call to action to legislators and civil organizations to help immigrants

I have no way of knowing that Trump will enforce what he has claimed, or if he plans to hide the fact that taxpayers are really paying for it by saying Mexico is when they really aren’t. However, what I do know is that it seems rather odd to send 50 Mexican Consulates to come defend Mexican immigrants. You know, considering these people fled Mexico for a reason.

Whatever the case may end up being, this war of words is just that. Neither Mexico nor the U.S. will lose this fight. The taxpayers will.
