Earlier, I responded to an AP tweet that laid the blame of the two dead death-worshiping cultists on the woman who held the event in Dallas. Pamela Geller, to be sure, is very outspoken about militant Islam, as the AP story explained, but the headline and tweet writing for the story was so absurdly biased that we all collectively thought they’d lost their minds.
And, once again, it speaks to the double-standard that the Left has when it comes to things they like and support versus things they blame for all the world’s problems.
On September 30, 2000, a Catholic priest drove his car through the front entrance of an abortion clinic in northern Illinois. He got an ax and appeared ready to do some damage when the building owner forced him to the ground after firing two warning shots. Did anyone from the AP, or anywhere else, ask the owner of the building why he would allow there to be an abortion clinic there? After all, abortion is something that offends Christians, and has a documented history of violence (though not on the scale of militant Islam) following the controversial issue.
Had someone launched a crazy crusade against anyone displaying the “Piss Christ,” that person would not have been given the benefit of the doubt, and the person displaying the “art” would not have been criticized for displaying it. If anything, the media would have worked tirelessly to tie the attack to the greater Christian movement, while in the case of acts of terror, the culprits are deemed “lone wolves” who have nothing to do with the religion they claim.
This is all at the very core of why people don’t trust journalists (beyond the folks that write at small town papers, publishing photographs of their kids and grandkids playing pee wee football). The absurd sensationalism and double-standard applied in the cases of religious extremism are easily documented and, frankly, tiresome. If you can’t trust the media to at least treat everyone equally (about the only praise I can give to Bill Maher is that he doesn’t shy away from taking militant Islamists down a notch), then you can’t trust them to be honest with you. Viewership and readership numbers reflect this lack of trust all the time.
If the AP wants to blame Geller for the shooting, let them. But the next time someone crazy does something in the name of Jesus Christ, let’s not hesitate to bombard the AP with demands that they ask the victim why they provoked that poor lone wolf.
