Testing by the National Bioforensic Laboratory has determined that a suspected biolab raided by the FBI on January 31 in Las Vegas contained materials to create COVID and pregnancy test kits, compounds for Influenza vaccines, and human blood and urine samples.
According to FBI Special Agent in Charge Christopher Delzotto, while some of the samples sent off for testing were too old to be tested, "it was the conclusion of the FBI lab that the community could not be harmed by what was contained in that lab."
As you'll recall, federal and state law enforcement officers acting on a tip raided the home of Jia Bei Zhu, the Chinese national who operated an illegal biolab in Reedley, California, and found multiple refrigerators and freezers containing vials, bottles, and jugs of unknown liquid substances, and laboratory equipment in the garage of the home, and sent 1,200 samples out for testing.
In an interview with 8 News Now, Delzotto said that the type of equipment found and the condition of the samples suggest that there was no active work going on at the location:
“I would describe it as a bio-storage facility where a lot of the remnants from what we know as the 2023 Reedley lab seem to have been stored in this garage for years. There were samples of liquids that had been there for years that have degraded to the point, based on being at room temperature, not refrigerated, again for an extensive period of time, that are degraded to the point where we can’t test them.”
With more of the back story, that makes sense.
Zhu has been in federal custody since late 2023, when he was arrested on charges related to the illegal biolab in Reedley. When news of the existence of the Reedley lab went public in the summer of 2023, Zhu was living in Las Vegas and was in the process of moving equipment and material from Reedley to Nevada and attempting to get a license to open a laboratory there. With the publicity around the Reedley biolab, Zhu cut off contact with Reedley authorities but still had his attorney file a $30 million claim against them for allegedly ruining his groundbreaking medical research. When Reedley Code Enforcement Officer Jessalyn Harper received that lawsuit, she contacted Zhu and asked him to come to Reedley to meet about a resolution.

Reedley officials asked him to come to California to meet with them about the lawsuit and possible remedies, but when he arrived, he was placed under arrest. He's been in custody since that time, unable to personally do anything to move or dispose of his equipment. That's when his property manager, Ori Solomon, stepped in, and moved things to the garage of the home that was eventually raided. Zhu's wife, Zhaoyan Wang, fled to China with their baby shortly after Zhu's arrest.
Although the community isn't at risk by what was found in Las Vegas, Delzotto said, "I think the question is, 'Why does somebody have these materials in a private residence that’s not a doctor, not a lab, not a licensed medical facility of any sort?’" He also questions how those blood and urine samples were procured.
Zhu is scheduled to go to trial in California in April for charges related to the Reedley biolab.
