Illegal Chinese Biolab Used As Airbnb, Made Several Deathly Ill; Defendant Owns Multiple Homes in NV, CA

LVMPD

Several people who stayed at the Las Vegas home apparently doubling as an illegal Chinese biolab became sick after their visit, with two people becoming "deathly ill" a few days after entering the home's garage, according to documents reviewed by Las Vegas journalist David Charns.

And that's just the beginning of today's updates. We've also learned more about how investigators believe the equipment ended up at that home, the relationship between the property manager, Ori Solomon, and the Chinese scientist charged with running the lab, Jia Bei Zhu.

Federal Charges for Property Manager

Federal gun charges have now been filed against Ori Solomon, the man serving as property manager for the home. Solomon, 55, appears to have lived in the Las Vegas area for more than a decade, according to public records, but the complaint filed Monday evening states that he's currently in the United States on a Non-Immigrant Visa (E-2) that expires in May, 2026, "which precludes him from owning or possessing a firearm per 18 U.S.C. § 922(g)(5)(B)."

Solomon's house was searched Saturday morning pursuant to a state search warrant, and officers observed "two 9mm bullets on the computer stand" in Solomon's home office and a black Glock semi-automatic pistol in a side cabinet. Because the search warrant did not specify seizure of any firearms, the Glock was left at the residence. They also found French and Israeli passports in Solomon's name.

Very early Sunday morning, Solomon called his daughter from jail (on a recorded line) and asked her, "Is there any guns left? Is there any guns left in the house or did they confiscate it?"

Based on the information in the call and the knowledge of Solomon's immigration status, federal officers obtained another search warrant and retrieved six guns from the home and charged him with Prohibited Person in Possession of a Firearm.

Communications With Zhu

According to the documents reviewed by 8 News Now, Zhu contacted Solomon (from jail) 467 times in January. Zhu "instructed Solomon to manage his properties and transfer money to him while awaiting trial."

Yes, you read that correctly; properties, plural.

In an October, 2023 pre-trial release hearing, prosecutors alleged that Zhu owned several homes and condos in Las Vegas and this home in Clovis, California through his corporation David Destiny Discovery.

It goes without saying (or it should) that these properties need to be thoroughly searched.

Fugitive Wife in China

Zhu is still in frequent contact with his girlfriend/wife/baby mama, Zhaoyan Wang, who is also facing federal charges but fled to China with their baby in 2023, contacting her 3,524 times in January, per the 8 News Now report. Investigators also believe that Wang has had access to video surveillance on the property.

Several People Sickened

In early January the FBI was contacted by a tipster who'd been contracted to clean the Las Vegas home and reported that there was lab equipment and medical waste in the garage. The FBI believed that equipment to be consistent with lab equipment reported to have been in the Reedley facility, and the FBI and the Southern Nevada Health District made the connection between that address and its owner and the Reedley biolab.

Then, public health authorities in Nevada were alerted in January by several tipsters who described conditions at the biolab home and reported becoming ill.

Another person inside the home reported the garage was always locked, documents said. A person also reported to investigators that the garage contained three refrigerators and that the room smelled “like a hospital – not like a clean hospital but more of a foul, stale, stagnant air smell.”

Several days after entering the garage, two people became “deathly ill,” and they “could not get out of bed,” documents said. A tipster also told police the house contained “many dead crickets” and several people had gotten sick.
