The man who was taken into custody as a "person of interest" Monday in the October murder of Detroit synagogue leader Samantha Woll has now been charged with murder, home invasion, and lying to police.

Detroit resident Michael Jackson-Bolanos, 28, entered a plea of not guilty on Wednesday and then returned to jail, where he is being held without bond. Jackson-Bolanos is not the same man who was held for about 72 hours in November related to the killing and then released.

Woll was found stabbed to death outside her home on October 21, and given her position as president of the Isaac Agree Downtown Detroit Synagogue there were questions as to the motive for the killing. At the time Detroit Police Chief James White said that "evidence suggests the crime was not motivated by antisemitism, and prosecutor Kym Worthy echoed that Wednesday:

There was not a “shred of evidence” that Samantha Woll was killed as a result of antisemitism or any hate crime.

“There are no facts to suggest this defendant knew Ms. Woll,” Worthy said.

Jackson-Bolanos' attorney, Brian Brown, told the Associated Press that he will vigorously defend his client (as he is required to do), and:

“I don’t necessarily agree with the charges. We’ll wait for the evidence.”

White said that as investigators were trying to solve larcenies in "the area" a few weeks ago, Jackson-Bolanos "came on [their] radar" and noted that many crimes, especially serious crimes, are not solved immediately.

“This is not a case you can solve like on television,” White said. “Hours and hours of evidence, hours and hours of video, of phone work, seven days a week.”

Detroit authorities and members of the mainstream media have worked overtime since the moment Woll's body was discovered to shoot down any thought that the murder was a hate crime, rooted in antisemitism. Perhaps it's true that Woll's murder was random and it was just a terrible coincidence that she's a known leader in Detroit's Jewish community, but you know what they say about coincidences.

At the time, police said there were no signs of forced entry and that the attack happened inside Woll's home after she returned home from a wedding at 12:30 a.m. While her Lafayette Park neighborhood is nice by Detroit standards, it's still Detroit, and it seems odd that she would leave her home unsecured during a time when Jewish people are facing such threats to their safety worldwide.
