Comedian Ricky Gervais Has a Marvelous Suggestion for Who Should Host Oscars, but It Will Never Happen

Comedian Ricky Gervais, who is no stranger to the progressive backlash against anything funny, offered a compelling suggestion for the next Academy Awards celebration. But, as always, his recommendation is so incredible that there is absolutely no way that the elitists who put these self-congratulatory spectacles together would dare to take it.

On Tuesday, Gervais wrote a post in which he suggested that he and fellow comedian Dave Chappelle, who just rattled more chains with his most recent special, should host the next Oscars.

Naturally, his recommendation was met with widespread approval from those who can appreciate edgy comedy.

Of course, this is a wonderful suggestion. If this were to happen, there can be no doubt that Gervais and Chappelle would take hilarious shots at Hollywood’s most elite who are used to being worshipped in their ivory towers. Both comedians might just say something that is edgy and possibly offensive. Of course, in front of an audience filled with people who love being offended, getting their collective panties in a bunch won’t be hard to accomplish.

But this is precisely why the awards show would never have either of these two on the stage. Indeed, the first time Chris Rock was set to host the festivities, I remember talk of people being nervous that he might say something that goes outside the box of allowable expression.

It wasn’t always this way.

Back in the day, comedians could do edgy comedy without a host of people falling over themselves to be offended. They could make fun of various groups of people, and the audience would laugh because they knew the jokes were being made in good faith.

People like Eddie Murphy, Don Rickles, Richard Pryor, George Carlin, and others would savage the elites with impunity. Punching up was always part of the routine, and even those being punched at would laugh.

Nowadays, the authoritarian left has made this much harder. They have constantly pushed for a more sanitized, less edgy, and less offensive form of comedy that is intended more to earn clapter than to actually entertain. In essence, these people want comedy to be less funny and more preachy, and are willing to enforce their will through the use of cancel culture.

Fortunately, Chappelle and Gervais show that cancel culture is not an all-powerful weapon. Yes, it does work far too often. But others have shown that they can make themselves immune to one of progressives’ favorite weapons. Nevertheless, there are still too many who have to fear losing their careers to the authoritarian cultural left. If something isn’t done, then American comedy will come to resemble Hannah Gadsby more than Dave Chappelle.
