There’s a reason why the White House and Democrats in Congress continue to harp on the “MAGA Republicans” talking point. Sure, it is a deceptive way of smearing the GOP to score cheap political points. But there is an underlying reason why the left continues to repeat this term ad nauseam.
The most recent case in which Democrats used the “MAGA Republicans” trope came after House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) unveiled the GOP’s “Commitment to America,” the party’s declared legislative agenda for when they retake the House in November.
The plan includes measures that will focus on crime, education, and the economy, which all happen to be issues on which the Democrats have not performed well. Naturally, Democrats have blasted the plan.
President Joe Biden, during an event held by the Democratic National Committee, commented on the legislative blueprint and reiterated his fallacious claim that “MAGA Republicans” are in charge of the party.
“The MAGA Republicans control the Republican Party right now, and that’s self-evident. That’s self-evident,” Biden quipped. “So there’s a lot at stake here. And I’m going to talk a little bit about that right now.”
The president continued:
“Earlier today, after opposing and obstructing everything we tried to do to stop progress for the last two years, the House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy went to Pennsylvania and unveiled what — what he calls a ‘Commitment to America.’ That’s a — that’s a thin series of policy goals, with little or no detail, that he says Republicans are going to pursue if they regain control of the Congress.”
Biden then repeated a claim he made during his Sith Lord speech in Philadelphia earlier this month, intimating that pro-lifers are the type of MAGA extremists he warned about.
“But look at what they’ve actually done,” he said. “The ‘MAGA Republicans’ just cheered and embraced the first Supreme Court decision [on abortion] in our entire history… that just didn’t fail to preserve a constitutional freedom, it actually took away a fundamental right that had been granted by the same court.”
Some might take this rhetoric as simple politicking, a way to scare the public into supporting Democrats. But the reality is a little deeper than that.
The fact of the matter is that Biden and his merry band of Democrats are constantly using these talking points because they have nothing left to run on. In fact, that has been the case all year. They have accomplished very little despite controlling the executive and legislative branches. In fact, for most Americans, the situation has gotten worse with Biden at the helm, which is why the “Commitment to America” is laser-focused on the areas Americans care about the most.
But a recent poll shows that the ongoing effort to portray conservatives as the type of folks who rioted at the U.S. Capitol building on Jan. 6 has grown wearisome for the voting public. Rasmussen conducted a poll that found that most voters are getting turned off by Biden’s constant focus on 2020 and Jan. 6 and want him to focus on addressing the nation’s most pressing issues.
Respondents were asked if they agree or disagree with the following statement: “Joe Biden should quit blaming ‘MAGA Republicans’ and get to working on the economy he ruined.” About 58 percent agreed with the remark while 38 percent disagreed.
The survey also found that 48 percent agree with Biden’s claim that “Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our republican,” while 47 percent disagreed. The results fell along party lines.
“80% of Democrats agree with Biden’s quote about the threat of MAGA ‘extremism,’ while 76% of Republicans disagree. Among voters not affiliated with either major party, 40% agree with Biden and 53% disagree,” according to Rasmussen.
Even though Democratic candidates have managed to shrink the gap between their polling numbers and that of Republicans, they remain in a precarious situation. Despite their gaslighting about the economy, education, and immigration issues, people can clearly see that the country is not headed in a favorable direction. The Democrats will need more than just “MAGA Republicans want to kill you” if they wish to maintain control of both chambers of Congress.
