Florida Voters Just Said ‘No’ to Wokeism in Schools

Florida’s voters have spoken, and it’s not good news for the so-called progressive left. However, for Gov. Ron DeSantis and conservative candidates, things are looking quite rosy at the moment.

The governor endorsed 30 candidates for school boards across the state. Of those, 25 won their races. Even better, some boards flipped from leftist to conservative, meaning the days of these districts infusing far-leftist ideology into the classroom might be numbered.

As RedState’s Kira Davis wrote:

That we are in an era where national outlets like RedState are reporting on local school board races speaks volumes to just how desperate for change American voters have become. Parents reached the limits of their patience with “social justice” political posturing and offensive curriculum. They were pushed too far. Local races have become bitter battle grounds as Americans grasp with the tough lessons of the last two years, thanks to pandemic-era overreach.

As usual, she’s right. Over the past two years, parents found out what school districts were presenting to their children, and they were not happy about it. They showed up at school board meetings to protest the radical ideas on race, sexuality, and gender identity being taught to their kids.

Indeed, in May, it was revealed that Broward Country Public Schools issued a support guide on LGBTQ students instructing teachers not to inform parents if a child who believes they are transgender decides to transition to the opposite sex. The guide read:

School personnel should privately ask a transgender student how they want to be addressed in communications to the home or at conferences with the student’s parent(s)/ guardian. In addition, prior to notification of any parent(s)/guardian regarding the transition process, school staff should work closely with the student to assess the degree to which, if any, the parent(s)/guardian will be involved in the process and must consider the health, well-being and safety of the transitioning student.

The battle was particularly fierce in the Sunshine State, where Gov. DeSantis declared war on the woke. The state’s legislature passed two laws to combat this trend: The Stop WOKE Act and the Parental Rights in Education Act. Under the new law, counties like Broward will no longer be able to keep parents in the dark when it comes to their children. Naturally, both pieces of legislation infuriated Democrats who insisted they were designed to whitewash America’s history and promote discrimination against LGBTQ students and teachers.

Of course, these were all lies, but leftists gonna leftist, right?

This could very well be the proverbial chickens coming home to roost all across the country. Florida’s parents are not the only ones fed up with the effort to indoctrinate their children. Many more decided to run for school board seats in other states and a significant number are winning their races.

Earlier this year, at least a dozen states passed legislation similar to Florida’s new laws despite protestations coming from the hard left. The backlash against these institutions is only growing, and the battle will likely grow more heated. Parents are increasingly looking for educational alternatives for their children, which has prompted national conversations on school choice. Homeschooling is on the rise. Enrollment in private schools – especially Catholic institutions – has increased substantially. Arizona recently passed major legislation providing more opportunities for parents to find other ways to get their kids educated.

But this does not mean the progressive crowd is giving up. In fact, they are steamrolling ahead with their indoctrination efforts. School districts are still implementing policies requiring teachers to conceal students’ gender identities from parents. They continue to infuse far-leftist ideology into the curriculum and teacher training. The battle is far from over, but the parental rights crowd is becoming more dominant.
