While progressives point fingers at conservatives while yelling “Jim Crow 2.0!” they have been busy pushing a little Jim Crow of their own. But it appears parents might start to win crucial victories in the battle against the woke segregation being pushed by the hard left.
Breitbart News reports:
A federal civil rights lawsuit brought by Parents Defending Education (PDE) against Massachusetts’s Wellesley Public Schools ended in a settlement Monday as the school district agreed to end its racial segregation policy and First Amendment violations.
The lawsuit was brought in response to the district’s promotion of racially segregated “affinity groups” and “bias response teams” that inherently counteract the First Amendment rights of students.
The school claimed their objective was to “pursue justice for … historically marginalized communities,” “continuously examine systems of privilege and bias,” “work collectively to disrupt and dismantle inequity in all its forms,” and to bring about “racial equity.” Ostensibly, this would somehow “nurture and affirm positive racial identity development.”
The district initially denied allegations that they held events in which they excluded students based on their race. However, the lawsuit provided an email from the district discussing “affinity groups” which read:
*Note: This is a safe space for our Asian/Asian-American and Students of Color, *not* for students who identify only as White. If you identify as White, and need help to process recent events, please know I’m here for you as well as your guidance counselors. If you need to know more about why this is not for White students, please ask me!
PDE suggested that those who support these groups argue that segregation is “essential” for students of color to “share freely and without inhibition about their experiences.”
PDE explained that under the settlement, the district “will be issuing a statement that it never should have – and never will again – suggest to parents that their children can be excluded from school-sponsored events because of their race.”
The settlement also requires the district to terminate its “Bias Reporting Structure” which “gave the school the power to punish speech simply because others believed it was ‘offensive’ or showed ‘conscious or unconscious bias.’”
“Parents Defending Education is thrilled that Wellesley Public Schools has agreed to respect both the First and Fourteenth Amendment rights of its students going forward,” said Nicole Neily, president of Parents Defending Education. “This settlement sends a clear message that racially segregating students in public schools is wrong – and there will be consequences. We have spent decades teaching our kids that racial segregation was and will always be wrong. We will not tolerate a return to segregation in 2022.”
Wellesley School District is one of several implementing woke segregationist practices. PDE’s press release identified at least 13 other districts that have enacted similar programs in their schools. One of these institutions is Centennial Elementary School in Denver, CO. PDE has pending legal action against this school because it held an event called “Families of Color Playground Night,” which caused controversy because it also excluded white students based purely on their skin color.
“This practice is both immoral and unconstitutional,” Neily said. “Although the ‘families of color playground night’ gained attention this week, we discovered that this program – which is run by the school’s ‘dean of culture’ – has been going on since October.”
Segregated events at school could possibly become an even bigger issue as more schools are exposed for imposing these types of programs. Along with Critical Race Theory and hard-leftist ideas on gender and sexuality, this seems to be yet another way to inject wokeism into the classroom in an attempt to indoctrinate students.
Parents concerned about these trends are already fighting back, as evidenced by the efforts of PDE and other groups. But the left is not going to let up even when facing defeat. Those opposing this must be even more adamant in preventing their attempts to bring back segregation. Otherwise, the indoctrination will continue and the left will achieve its goal to raise a generation of activists.
