Democrats can dish it out, but they can’t take it. This reality was on full display in a recent op-ed written by author Jill Filipovic for CNN, in which she clutched her pearls over comments made by House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA).
The author took issue with McCarthy’s recent threat to strip Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Eric Swalwell (D-CA), and Adam Schiff (D-CA) of their committee assignments as retaliation for Democrats doing the same to Reps. Paul Gosar (R-AZ) and Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) last year. During an exclusive interview with Breitbart News, he said:
The Democrats have created a new thing where they’re picking and choosing who could be on committee. Never in the history have you had the majority tell the minority who could be on committee.
McCarthy then explained why Swalwell should be taken off the House Intelligence Committee. “If Eric Swalwell cannot get a security clearance in the private sector, there’s no reason why he should be given one to be on intel or homeland security, so he will not be serving there,” he said.
The House Minority Leader also asserted that “Ilhan Omar should not be serving on foreign affairs,” and that Schiff “should not be serving on intel when he has openly, knowingly … used a fake dossier, lied to the American public in the process.”

Predictably, Filipovic was none too happy about McCarthy’s remarks and claimed that if the GOP retakes the House in November, “2023 is going to be rough — not just for liberals, but for American democracy and the country’s overall stability.”
She continued, claiming that “[t]he GOP is on the path to become an antidemocratic party.”
Last year, House Democrats removed Rep. Greene from her committee assignments because of a ridiculous social media post she made before she was elected. Rep. Gosar was stripped of his committee assignments after he posted a video on social media in which he was depicted as attacking several Democrats with swords in a scene from “Attack on Titan,” a popular anime series.
Democrats and the activist media responded by pretending the ill-advised video was tantamount to a call for violence. Filipovic echoed the left’s narrative about these two lawmakers:
In a saner democracy, comments like Gosar’s and Greene’s would make them personas non grata within their party. Instead, GOP leadership has, for the most part, made weak condemnations of their comments and then continued to embrace them.
The author then lamented that “instead of simply letting those chips fall, he’s seeking vengeance on Democrats who have not done anything comparable to Greene or Gosar.”
It is not surprising that someone like Filipovic would expect Republicans to simply allow the Democrats to remove GOP lawmakers from committee assignments when the tradition is for each party to handle these issues within their parties. Her ilk actually believes the GOP should just take it with a smile and ignore what Democratic lawmakers have done.
Swalwell was potentially compromised by a Chinese spy with whom he is suspected of having had a sexual relationship. The spy was cozying up with various American politicians to infiltrate the country’s political system. The lawmaker refused to answer questions about the intimacy of their relationship. He currently serves on the House Intelligence Committee, and it is obvious that if he had an “R” next to his name, folks like Filipovic would cheer his being removed from the committee. Also, Swalwell looks like Dexter, which is already disturbing enough. This alone is a valid enough reason to kick him off his committees.
Rep. Adam Schiff has a history of lying about the Russia collusion narrative. In many instances, he claimed to possess evidence that the false claims made in the Steele dossier were facts. He never produced a shred of proof demonstrating this but still attempted to deceive the American public into believing former President Donald Trump collaborated with the Kremlin to win the 2016 election.
Rep. Ilhan Omar has an extensive history of making anti-Semitic remarks even after being elected. If Democrats can remove Greene for comments she made before she took office, Omar should definitely receive the same treatment — given that she made her controversial remarks as a U.S. representative. Instead, the Democrats gave her a stern talking to and left her in her position.
To put it simply, there are plenty of valid reasons to remove these lawmakers from their committees, especially since the Democrats are the ones who established the precedents.
Filipovic then goes on to discuss the Democrats’ favorite subject: The Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol. She wrote:
Some Republican members of Congress have justified or downplayed the events of Jan. 6. They have faced no consequences from their party, and some are now running for reelection, despite the fact that the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution states that no one “who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress … to support the constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same.”
That first sentence is deceptive. While some GOP lawmakers have downplayed the incident, there are none who actually justified the violence, which is why the author didn’t bother to name any. She tells another lie when she claims “Republican members of Congress are openly encouraging violence and attempting to subvert American democracy.” Again, she names no GOP lawmakers who are “encouraging violence” because there aren’t any.
But this whole situation is a prime example of making your bed and having to lie in it. McCarthy seems to be reading the room and knows many conservatives – myself included – want House Republicans to give the Democrats a taste of their own medicine.
The only hope for putting a stop to these politically-motivated actions is to show the left that if they continue to engage in this conduct, they will also be on the receiving end of it. A form of mutually-assured destruction could give Democrats pause next time they consider this type of action. Hopefully, McCarthy’s remarks aren’t just empty words.
