Progressive Logic: When Our Stupid Policies Fail, Just Blame the Victim

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot is a dyed-in-the-wool progressive through and through. Indeed, she quite embodies the typical far-leftist politician in that she won her seat by making all kinds of pie-in-the-sky promises on the campaign trail. Like her comrades, she made sweeping pronouncements of a better Chicago through having more and more government.

Under her governance, conditions in the city have worsened to the point that one might be tempted to think there is no way back. At first, it seemed her administration was on top of things, with crime rates dropping for three years in a row.

But now, violent crimes have surged amid widespread unrest, lax crime policies, and an anti-police atmosphere fomented by Lightfoot’s ilk. It’s already bad enough, but in this particular story, Lightfoot demonstrates precisely how progressives feel about those they govern.

National Review reported:

The owner of a high-end Chicago car dealership is calling on city officials to crack down on smash-and-grab burglaries after his dealership was targeted in a robbery on Saturday.

Two people reportedly robbed the Gold Coast Auto Gallery in Chicago’s Near North Side, with owner Joe Perillo saying the thieves took eight luxury watches worth over $1 million. Security footage showed one man standing by the door of the dealership with a gun, while another smashed a glass case in the store.

Ten customers were inside the store at the time, including children.

During a Monday appearance on “Fox & Friends,” Perillo said the incident “happened in broad daylight on Saturday.”

He continued:

“And they have people come and break into your store while there are customers shopping and there are children in there.”

The business owner also urged Mayor Lightfoot and Cook County district attorney Kim Foxx to start doing something about the rash of robberies and other violent crimes occurring in the city during a conversation with CBS Chicago.

“It’s only a fool who keeps doing things the same way and expects different results,” Perillo insisted. “If the Mayor and Kim Foxx don’t do anything to get control of this, it’s not going to get better. It’s going to get worse.”

So how did progressive superstar Mayor Lori Lightfoot respond to those calling on her to do her job? She blamed them for getting robbed in the first place, stating that she is “disappointed” that these businesses are not doing an adequate job of safeguarding their stores.

During a conversation at the University of Illinois in Chicago, she said:

“We still have retailers that won’t institute plans like having security officers in their stores, making sure that they’ve got cameras that are actually operational, locking up their merchandise at night, chaining high-end bags.”

She added: “These purses can be something that is attracting a lot of organized retail theft units.”

You read that right.

Lightfoot is blaming the owners of these businesses for the rash of looting in her city. Over the past few weeks, the nation has seen an uptick in these crimes being committed, and the Windy City is one of those experiencing this disturbing trend.

But apparently, Lightfoot would rather point the finger at the victim rather than take responsibility for her administration’s failure to handle crime. Instead of implementing actual solutions to bring crime rates down, people like her embraced the “Defund the Police” mania that swept the country after the murder of George Floyd. She contributed to the “All Cops Are B*st*rds” narrative peddled by the hard left, which resulted in a wave of police resignations from police departments across the nation.

But in the end, far-leftists like Lightfoot don’t care. It does not matter to them that their policies create death, poverty, destruction, and hopelessness. The lives that are destroyed are of no consequence to them as long as they are pushing the nation and its cities closer to their vision of a Marxist utopia. They don’t stop to re-evaluate whether their approach to governance is the best for the people who live under their rule. They covet only one thing: Power at all costs. At some point, America has to get fed up.
