President Joe Biden is in dire need of a victory. His approval ratings have been rapidly plunging into dangerous depths, and his decline has not shown signs of slowing down.
It seems that his team is well aware of the precarious situation in which the president finds himself. According to a CNN report, the issues like the COVID-19 pandemic have “slowed momentum for [Biden’s] domestic agenda in Congress,” while making him “appear ineffective.”
Democratic lawmakers seem to believe they can mobilize the party to pass the president’s “Build Back Better” agenda, which includes policies related to infrastructure, social policy, and climate change, by the end of October. However, Team Biden is pushing to get the job done as quickly as possible.
A senior administration official told CNN: “We are going to wrap it this week, or deploy a new approach.”
The report noted:
The White House’s impatience is fueled by the specter of losing the ability to achieve its goals for the balance of Biden’s term. Democratic political strategists warn the collapse of his legislative agenda would quash the party’s uphill fight to protect its razor-thin House and Senate majorities in next year’s midterm elections. The President’s top aides know that time is not on their side.
CNN also acknowledged that Biden’s decline “could make the difference between a presidential tailwind and anchor for Democratic candidates under fierce Republican attack if it persists into next year.”
Democrats are hoping they can eke out a victory on infrastructure and other elements of Biden’s agenda, but the process has not been easy for them. Their inability to get Republican lawmakers on board with the agenda, which would cost at least $4.5 trillion, is a significant hurdle. On top of that, Democratic Sens. Kyrsten Sinema and Joe Manchin have also expressed opposition.
Biden’s legislative proposal will have a very small chance of passing without making significant cuts and a willingness to compromise with their GOP colleagues. Moreover, the administration has egregiously mishandled a variety of situations like the migrant crisis, Afghanistan, and the economy.
The author is right: Time is certainly not on President Biden’s side – especially when it comes to helping Democrats maintain control of both chambers of Congress. Since taking office, Democrats have not had many opportunities to add hash marks to the “win” column. They passed legislation providing COVID emergency relief funding – and that’s pretty much it.
Every item on Biden’s agenda remains in limbo. He promised to provide a pathway to citizenship to 11 million illegal immigrants residing in the U.S. It is part of the Build Back Better plan. The president also vowed to enact a decidedly anti-gun initiative designed to make it more difficult for responsible Americans to obtain and own firearms. Democrats declared they would address police brutality with the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. But that effort has crashed and burned.
The more radical aspects of Biden’s plan have not gained much traction in Congress. It is at a point where the far-left socialist wing of the party and the moderate establishment are already placing blame on one another, anticipating the beatdown they will likely receive in the upcoming midterm elections, which aren’t as far away as it seems.
The campaigns for 2022 have already begun and they will be ramping up in the near future. The Democrats don’t have until November of next year to get things done – their time is much shorter than that. If Biden and company wish to protect their control over Congress, they need to start putting wins on the board right now. Otherwise, they won’t have much to run on during election season. Democratic lawmakers need to have achievements to brag about when they go home to their constituents.
If they fail to make any major achievements in the next few months, they will face a brutal reckoning next year. Sure, they will pivot to trying to keep the attention on former President Donald Trump and conservatives. The activist media will help them push the Jan. 6 riots at the U.S. Capitol and continue their typical “conservatives are Nazis” propagandizing.
But this alone will not save them. Without tangible results, the Democrats, along with President Biden’s agenda, are doomed.
