An Alabama city councilman stepped in it when he used a racial slur in reference to a black woman during a Tarrant city council meeting. During a heated argument, Tommy Bryant referred to Veronica Freeman as a “house n*gger.”

In a video that went viral on social media, Bryant can be seen asking “Do we have a house n*gger in here?”

During an exchange in which an audience member claimed Bryant’s wife used the n-word in a Facebook post, Bryant responded:

“Let’s get to the n-word. Do we have a house n*gger in here? Do we? Do we?”

The crowd predictably reacts with shock and the fallout was understandably fierce. Bryant was savaged by both Democrats and Republicans, many of whom called for his resignation. The council member made an appearance with WVTM in which he attempted to defend his racist comments.

The councilman claimed he was just repeating remarks made by Tarrant’s black mayor, Republican Wayman Newton, who also happens to be black. Bryant stated that Newton originally used the slur against Freeman.

Bryant said:

I thought that the city ought to know what sort of terminology the mayor uses and I didn’t want him to get away with it so that’s the reason I used that comment.

He continued: “We need to stop the racial slurs that the mayor makes. He’s always picking on Veronica Freeman…the mayor bullies her. The city needs to know what kind of mayor and what kind of vocabulary he has.”

Bryant claimed he is not a racist and that he “did what needed to be done.”

However, Newton denied allegations that he used the slur in reference to Freeman. “They are trying to expose me for saying something I did not say,” he insisted. “All of that was a political stunt that they did not do very well.”

The mayor also noted that each meeting with members of the council is recorded. “I never used that phrase to speak about her,” he added. “Ask them to produce the video. They record everything. They should have their own recording. They want me out. He (Bryant) wants to run for mayor.”

The Alabama Democratic Party pounced on the council member’s comments. In a written statement, they argued that “Alabama still has a long way to go when it comes to race” and that “using the N-word should make you unfit to serve.”

Alabama Republican Party Chairman John Wahl said that Bryant’s comments were “completely unacceptable in any setting,” but did not call for his resignation.

Wahl released a statement that read:

The Alabama Republican Party is deeply troubled by the racially charged outburst and disrespect shown by Councilman Tommy Bryant. Such language is completely unacceptable in any setting, and even more concerning coming from an elected official.

He added:

We are proud to have Mayor Wayman Newton as a member of the Jefferson County Republican Party and deeply appreciate his commitment to serving his constituents honorably, even in the face of adversity.

This is not the first conflict that Bryant has had with Newton. The mayor previously accused the councilmember of referring to him as “boy.”

So far, nobody has provided evidence showing that Newton used any racial slurs against Freeman. If meetings between the mayor and council members are recorded, it should be easy to produce proof. Still, even if Newton used this type of language, Bryant’s using it as an excuse to refer to a black woman as a “house n*gger” is reprehensible. It is the type of behavior that gives the left valid points when they go on their race-baiting tirades.

Still, it is important to acknowledge that the issue is not the fact that people like Bryant exist on the right. The issue is how the rest of the conservative movement responds to people on our side when these issues crop up. If we reacted to stories like this with the same energy we reacted to Brandi Love trying to attend a Turning Point USA event, the left’s constant race-baiting would not be as much of an issue.

Note, I am not saying the left would stop calling conservatives racist just for disagreeing with them. What I’m saying is that their attacks would be less effective. If we are willing to hold our own accountable when they engage in this conduct, their stupid allegations wouldn’t stick so tightly. It would certainly make it easier for conservatives to seize more ground in the culture war.
