We can file this one other “issues the activist media will ignore.” Some of President Joe Biden’s cabinet picks have some troubling issues as far as ethics are concerned. Fox News published a report detailing some of the problematic ethical issues that have followed some of Biden’s nominees.
According to Fox, “Biden’s Commerce Secretary pick, Gina Raimondo, Homeland Security pick Alejandro Mayorkas and Labor Secretary pick Marty Walsh have all faced questions about favoritism or conflicts of interest in the last decade.”
Adam Laxalt, outside counsel for Americans for Public Trust criticized Raimondo in a statement given to Fox News. “It’s extraordinary how many of these top Biden nominees are already under an ethics cloud. We’re going back to the future, as many of these former Obama officials are bringing their baggage back with them,” he wrote.
WPRI reported that Gov. Raimondo had an ethics complaint filed against her by the state GOP, castigating her for allowing a $1 billion contract extension with IGT, a gaming company, without a competitive bidding process in 2019. The state’s ethics commission dismissed the complaint, which also alleged a conflict of interest since Donald Sweitzer, a lobbyist for the company, was working with the Democratic Governors Assocation, which was headed by Raimondo.
“We have serious reservations about Governor Raimondo being nominated to Commerce Secretary,” Rhode Island GOP Chairwoman Sue Cienki told Fox News. “The ethics commission (all appointees of the Governor) determined that the Governor and Don Sweitzer were business associates, however, Mr. Sweitzer would not financially gain from the relationship therefore there was not probable cause for an ethics violation (despite the financial windfall from owning stock in a company that was securing a 20-year lottery deal, which is virtually unheard of in the business…).”
Mayorkas came under fire while he served as the head of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services under former President Barack Obama. An inspector general report found that he personally intervened to “help foreign investors in the EB-5 visa program who were connected to top Democrats,” according to Fox.
According to the report, Mayorkas “pressured staff” to push through the review of a Las Vegas hotel and casino investment at the behest of then-Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. But this wasn’t the former Obama official’s first rodeo when it came to ethics violations.
From Fox News:
Years earlier, Mayorkas was chastised for his ‘inappropriate’ involvement in events that led to the pardon of a convicted drug trafficker after the defendant’s father contributed thousands of dollars to campaigns for Xavier Becerra, another Biden Cabinet pick. Mayorkas was a U.S. attorney at the time. After contact from Becerra, Mayorkas placed calls to Washington, including to the White House, about the case despite admittedly not being very familiar with the facts.
Boston Mayor Marty Walsh also has a rather shady past. Biden tapped him to lead the Labor Department. He has been under scrutiny since campaign filings revealed that he paid over $1 million to his girlfriend’s fundraising consulting firm. Fox noted that he “was also once linked to a federal probe alleging his associates had used illegal tactics to “strong-arm” local developers.”
Fox also reported:
In an October 2012 conversation recorded through federal wiretaps, Walsh informed a local union leader that he had told housing developer AvalonBay Communities that it would face permitting delays if it did not hire union workers for a planned project. In a separate incident in December 2012, a developer told the Boston Globe that Walsh had pressured him to rescind building contracts awarded to non-union contractors.
But we already know how all of this will turn out, right? The activist media won’t dig into these people’s careers, and they won’t investigate any of the ethics complaints lodged against them. Indeed, they will give glowing reviews to these individuals and excoriate any Republican lawmaker who dares to bring up any ethics blemish related to these folks. Politics is so much easier when you’re a Democrat, isn’t it?
