Just when you thought COVID-19 restrictions couldn’t get any worse, California Gov. Gavin Newsom says, “hold my beer.” On Monday, Newsom announced that he is mulling a statewide curfew and looking into studies from countries like Germany and Saudi Arabia on potential strategies to implement these measures.
During his announcement, Newsom discussed other measures that his office might enact to combat the spread of COVID-19, which has seen an uptick recently.
“We also are considering, full disclosure, a little bit of a preview, the notion of a curfew,” he said. “Now, before you jump in terms of your mindset on whether that’s a good idea or a bad idea, we are assessing that as well. I have on my desk quite literally three studies from France, Germany, and Saudi Arabia, interestingly, that have done comprehensive studies on the efficacy of their strategies as it relates to curfews.”
The governor also referenced Portugal as a potential example to follow as well as Massachusetts, which requires particular types of businesses to close between 9:30 pm and 5 am. He is also looking at Virginia, which imposed an “alcohol-based curfew” which compels bars and restaurants to stop serving alcohol by 10 pm.
“We’re assessing all of that, we want to socialize that,” Newsom explained. “We have a lot of questions about what that looks like, what that doesn’t look like, who does it impact, who doesn’t it impact — what does a real curfew mean in just the kind of industry and business activities? That’s what we are referring to in this space. But we really want the data to bear out, and we want the information not to be anecdotal, we want to really take a look at those studies.”
Progressive governors seem to be working hard to create new ways to restrict the residents living under their governance. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo recently instituted COVID-19 restrictions for Thanksgiving gatherings. Fortunately, sheriffs in the state have expressed their refusal to enforce his rules. In Michigan, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s office imposed new restrictions as well.
It’s almost like they’re all in a competition to see who can enact the most draconian coronavirus measures. While we can’t determine which governor will win this contest, we can be sure that the losers will be the American citizens who have to live under these ridiculous rules.
