Judge Amy Coney Barrett addressed the myriad attacks against her religion and family on Tuesday during the Supreme Court confirmation proceedings. Despite the vitriol coming from the left, the Supreme Court nominee seemed undeterred.
During the hearing, Barrett said that she tried to be on a “media blackout for the sake of my mental health.” But she was still aware of the numerous attacks that the left are using to smear her.
“Look, I’ve made distinct choices,” she began. “I’ve decided to pursue a career and have a large family, I have a multiracial family, our faith is important to us, all of those things are true but they are my choices.”
Barrett is a devout Catholic and a mother to seven children. Her family adopted two of her children from Haiti and one has Down syndrome. “I’ve never tried in my personal life to impose my choices on them and the same is true professionally,” she said.
The judge stated that the confirmation process was “difficult” and “excruciating” and would likely have an impact on her family. “We knew that our lives would be combed over for any negative detail, we know that our faith would be caricatured, we knew our family would be attacked,” she acknowledged.
But despite the ordeal that she and her family will face, the judge indicated that her resolve remains strong. “Why should I say that someone else should do the difficulty if the difficulty is the only reason to say no?” she asked. “I should serve my country and my family is all in on that because they share my belief in the rule of law.”
Even before President Trump announced her nomination, Barrett became the target of vicious attacks coming from the Democrats and their allies in the corporate press. They mocked her faith, implying that her appointment to the Supreme Court would result in a future that resembles the television show “The Handmaid’s Tale.”
Lauren Hough, a supposed feminist author, tweeted, “It’s a very weird thing to watch these old creeps congratulate a handmaid on her clown car vagina.” She continued:
“You can tell a lot about how a judge will rule by her fertility so I’m glad she’s already proven hers because the cervix check really shouldn’t be done live. But I’m excited for her to share her casserole recipe and some stain-removal tips.”
Leftists also used Barrett’s adopted children to attack her, accusing her of some type of weird racism since she, a white woman, took in black kids. Some even went so far as to intimate that she might have been involved in human trafficking.
Unfortunately, the attacks are unlikely to stop. Indeed, as the confirmation proceedings continue, the Democrats will ramp up their vile rhetoric against the judge just as they did with Supreme Court Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh. The difference, in this case, will be that they will not be able to dial it up to Kavanaugh-like proportions because it is highly unlikely that they will be able to find men willing to fabricate sexual misconduct allegations against her. Even though the Democrats might protest, Judge Amy Coney Barrett will be appointed to the Supreme Court before Election Day.
