A mass triggering occurred all across the world of progressivism after the Senate voted to proceed with the impeachment vote without hearing from additional witnesses. Prominent leftists took to social media to fret over the president’s impending acquittal. In interviews on everyone’s favorite left-leaning news outlets, progressive pundits postulated that the country was headed towards authoritarian rule.
It would be hilarious if it wasn’t so sad.
Despite the fact that any person with a modicum of common sense could see that the impeachment effort was doomed from the start, leftists in the media and entertainment industry are still shrieking about the unfairness of a failed politically-motivated impeachment effort. Let’s start with journalist Carl Bernstein, who is famous for suggesting that everything he doesn’t like is, “worse than Watergate.”
In an appearance on CNN Newsroom, he discussed the differences between Nixon’s impeachment and Trump’s. Host Jim Sciutto wondered why Republican lawmakers were willing to turn on President Nixon, but not Trump. Bernstein responded:
“Well, first of all let’s look at what Watergate was because it was about a criminal president who acted as a tyrant. And what we have here now is the Senate of the United States through the Republican leadership and membership has now joined hands with a tyrant.”
But it gets even better. After Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) said he planned to vote “No” on hearing new witnesses, alleged comedian Kathy Griffin lost what is left of her mind. She unloaded on the lawmaker in a crazed Twitter rant: “So, history will reflect that Lamar Alexander and John f*ing Bolton as the two frail, old, pathetic men who took the United States from the great experiment of democracy to an authoritarian kleptocracy?”
Former Star Trek actor George Takei also chimed in, alleging that the GOP is involved in a “cover-up.” He tweeted: “The GOP-controlled Senate was as much on trial as Trump. And We the People find them guilty of a cover-up. In November, there will be a reckoning. Pass it on.” Well, we can’t say he isn’t right — there will be a reckoning in November. But because of this impeachment effort, as well as the general lunacy on full display among far-leftists that reckoning may not go the way Takei hopes.
But wait! There’s more!
Andy Lassner, producer of the Ellen show, went for a rather bizarre Hail Mary in an odd tweet. “Well it looks like there may be new rules. So, attention world: If you have proof of any abortions Donald Trump may have paid for, send ‘em over. All of his texts, emails and phone calls would be cool,” he wrote. He added, “All his promises/love letters to Putin, MBJ[sic] and other despots are welcome.”
NBC’s John Meacham also went into a full Trump Derangement Syndrome-fueled diatribe, asserting that the Senate is making Trump into a “king.” He whined, “President Trump is functionally a monarch at this point. If the king does it, it’s okay.” He continued, stating that “Donald Trump may well have now become the most powerful president in American history.”
Comedian Bill Maher, who sometimes lapses into being reasonable, also went off the deep end. “We’re in a post-democracy world,” he said on his show Real Time with Bill Maher. He also stated that “rule of law in America is over.”
To those following American politics over the past three years, this mass meltdown does not come as a surprise. From the moment Trump took office, it was evident that the far left sought to impeach him, even when they had nothing on which to base their case. For some reason, many on the left seemed to believe that the President was actually going to be removed from office even though every manufactured scandal they tried to use against him failed.
They started with Russiagate, claiming that Trump was a puppet of the Russian government who colluded with the Kremlin to win the 2016 election. After special counsel Robert Mueller’s report annihilated that narrative, they thought Trump’s phone call with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky would become their magic bullet. But it appears they might just be shooting blanks.
The Senate is expected to hold the vote on Trump’s removal next Wednesday, and the Democrats’ chances for success are dim. They have not provided enough evidence showing that Trump committed an impeachable offense to turn GOP lawmakers against the President. As I stated previously, the effort was doomed from the beginning. But the furor over Trump will not subside anytime soon.
The progressive left is on a mission to paint the President as a Hitleresque figure, a would-be dictator. It is this mission that prompts someone like Carl Bernstein to call him a “tyrant.” If you have been paying attention to the media lately, you will see that the progressive media has ramped up their rhetoric when it comes to referring to the President as a dictator.
The attempt to paint the President as a nascent authoritarian strongman who is leading the country towards totalitarianism is a concerted effort among progressive members of the press. When looking at the progressives’ endeavor to convince the nation that the President is threatening democracy, the pot and kettle come to mind. In reality, it is they who wish to see the government empowered and the individual diminished. It is the policies the progressives favor that will make everyday Americans less free.
Trump is many things, but an authoritarian dictator he is not. Despite the fact that his phone call with Zelensky was not “perfect” as he has claimed, there is no credible evidence proving that he engaged in behavior that is worthy of impeachment, and it certainly does not warrant accusations of tyranny. But just as the far-left loves to call people bigots for disagreeing with them, they are now throwing around the “dictator” label because they believe it will help them win in November.
We can expect to see them do more of this hysterical posturing as the election draws closer. But will it be enough to persuade voters to support them?
