It’s no secret Ted Cruz is not very well liked by his peers in the Senate. Cruz has never been a process guy, and his election in 2012 stirred the pot in a major way. It wasn’t always the best way as the Senator at times seemed not to plan ahead or miscalculated the results.
That said, Ted Cruz is a stalwart defender of the Constitution, and it would make a lot of sense for President Trump to nominate Cruz to be a Supreme Court Justice. It would kill two birds with one stone. It would take Cruz out of the Senate, thereby removing what many in that chamber feel is a thorn in their sides. A special election would fill the vacant seat, and it would likely remain in Republican hands. It would also assure conservatives; the court would get a replacement in the mold of Antonin Scalia.
One of the people calling for Cruz’s consideration for the Supreme Court is none other than South Carolina Senator, Lindsey Graham:
U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham said in January that choosing between Sen. Ted Cruz and Donald Trump for the Republican presidential nomination was “like choosing between getting shot or poisoned.” On Friday morning, he recommended that President-elect Trump nominate Cruz to the U.S. Supreme Court.
“I would put Ted Cruz on that list. I would suggest that President Trump look within the Senate,” Graham said when asked who Trump should nominate for the court’s current vacancy. “There is some talent there. There is no stronger constitutional conservative than Ted Cruz.”
People will argue, naturally, that Graham is only interested in getting Cruz out of the Senate. My response to that is, “So what?”
Supreme Court Justice Ted Cruz would be much better for the constitution than Senator Ted Cruz. One voice out of nine as opposed to one voice out of fifty.
The value this suggestion has is it would no doubt unite almost all factions of the Republican Party. Even people who hate Ted Cruz cannot make the case he wouldn’t be an excellent addition to the Supreme Court. Democrats will go out of their minds if Ted Cruz is on a short list of nominees. That alone makes it worth doing.
