This is a rather unusual Morning Briefing if only because the last 72 hours have been rather unusual and I am exhausted. My apologies in advance.Governor Perry announced to the nation he was running for President. He did so at the RedState Gathering. You can see the video and read the transcript of his remarks right here.Had Governor Perry not spoken, Governor Haley of South Carolina would have stolen the show. The Ames Straw Poll happened. Keep in mind that the usefulness of the Ames Straw Poll is that it is the most accurate indicator of who will not be the nominee. The Ames Straw Poll has only predicted the eventual Iowa Caucus winner 3 times in the past three decades and the eventual nominee twice. In 1980, Ronald Reagan came in fourth place behind George H. W. Bush.Considering Michele Bachmann is the winner of the straw poll and that no member of the House of Representatives has gone on to the White House since the 1800’s, suddenly history is really stacked against her.But that is no reason to start demanding her withdrawal. She does not deserve that.Tim Pawlenty did withdraw while so many of us were still in Charleston, South Carolina. There are many candidates more deserving of the title “former candidate for President” than Tim Pawlenty. And I hope those candidates will learn from Pawlenty’s departure a valuable lesson in leadership — knowing when to lead, even when the direction is off the field. Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum, and Herman Cain — I’m looking in your direction.Oh, and having seen it first hand, let me assure you Rick Perry has one singular advantage over everyone else in the race that must not be ignored. That’s the briefing. I’m exhausted after this week and I’m going back to bed. Have a great day!If you go to RedState, you can see speeches from Don Stenberg, Richard Mourdock, Ted Cruz, Adam Hasner, Michael Williams, Tim Scott, Rick Scott, Jim DeMint, and more.
